Anyone got any experiences of this (from trauma not laminitis?). Just had to get the vet out to my horse who came in hopping lame this morning and he thinks hes torn the laminae in the back of his hind hoof from cavorting around his field last night, silly boy. Never heard of this before, but the vet didnt seem to think it was serious, unless he gets a haematoma there

What treatment did the vet suggest GP? I would have thought the cause may be different but the actual problem is the same thing???

Box rest & bute...said most horses come sound within a few days (unless they get a haematoma). I assumed the same as you, but I asked if there were any long term implications or if he was going to be prone to laminitis and he said no. Cant find anything thing in the internet about it either, which is why I was asking on here. Going to have a chat to my farrier about it to.

Good idea to chat to your farrier. During my training in barefoot trimming I tried to tear off many hoof walls from their laminae and knowing just how hard that is to do I'd be very surprised if a horse did this mucking about in a field.

From what I know, the laminae is a fibrous membrane, so I assuming he has torn some of the fibres rather than torn the laminae away from the hoof wall. If that was the case Im sure he would be absolutely crippled?
