HIya, sorry this may be a long one....

My TB got kicked on his knee just before xmas. Vet came out and he had antibiotics and was bandaged up to the eye balls for a week. Wound looked healthy and clean and healed well.

about 8 weeks later (2 weeks ago) I noticed his knee had swollen and developed heat over the following few days and quite a big fluidy lump under his cut.

called vet out who gave him 5 day course of doxycycline and bute. Swelling and heat went down considerably but the lump stayed, possibly even got a bit bigger. 48 hours after finishing antibiotics the heat returned.

In the end took him into Liphook for xray and ultra sound. 1st vet thought abcess but surgeon found a small split in the tendon sheath that looked like it was leaking fluid into the surrounding area, causing this lump to form.

we were then given two options- rest for another week and see if this starts to repair itself, or go straight for surgery and repair the split. they didn't want to drain the fluid as could introduce infection or irritate it.

If it gets worse over the weekend or next week he'll need to have the surgery but I don't really know what to do if it stays the same. He's really not that lame on it- after the journey to the vets and standing around he still only trotted up 2/10 lame. He seems quite happy in himself and still very happy to prat around in the field.

Basically, what i'm asking is what would you do if it was your horse and has anybody had any experience of this type of injury?

Cake for everybody who got this far!! Thanks

I think, bearing in mind that my horse is recovering from a tear in her DDFT, that if I was you I would rest your horse for a while and see if nature takes the healing road. My mare was diagnosed with the tear and at the same time they found she had an inflamed tendon sheath in her hind leg (ddft tear in front). Time is the healer in a lot of these sorts of injuries and if time didnt work then I would opt for the surgery. If its an insurance claim then if like me, you will have 12 months from the start of the claim to get it sorted so time for the surgery. I think its quite invasive and very open to infection so maybe the easry rest road is the way to go initially. Having said all that, my horse didnt suffer a kick like yours so be guided by your vet.
