I live in the swansea area (Wales) there are horses tethered untethered walking all over the place they got welsh ponies which go for a £1! Now the RSPCA are rounding them up and slaughtering them NO KIDDING! Apparently its going to happen in the next few weeks.

This seems like a rational, sensible idea to me, the horses then do not get injured, or cause accidents, they will not receive correct care if they remain where they are and are unlikely to be rehomed in the curret economic climate. What would you suggest they do?

I actually disagree, I think it's wrong, I think this is all getting out of control and is ridiculous. Cows and sheep are treated better than these poor animals. Something needs to be done, I just don't know what?! I find it all pretty upsetting that it has got to this state in a 'supposedly' country on animals lovers. How have we let it get like this?

As others say, if they are not needed or cared for then they are better off being humanely put down. What is the difference between sending them to a lion enclosure and sending them to the hunt? It is environmentally sound and sensible in my view. Sad state of affairs but unfortunately that is the way it is.:(

My view is the people should not be allowed to own a horse but it's not the horses fault they get into these situations its not like they will be put to sleep they are going to be used for dog meat. To me these horses are worth more than that and would be better off taken to a sanctuary where they will be rehomed. Then if they cannot find a sanctuary then as you say thats the only thing to do.

The sanctuaries are full to bursting point with unwanted horses and ponies. Sadly there isn't anyone to take them in! What else can be done with them other than pts? A shame, but it's the hard fact of life with horses at the moment.

Wish they would round them up from the central reservation on a dual carriageway in York or at the side of a bridge tethered by the gyspys bought from the sales and fattened up for the meat man. That does wind me up those poor shetlands.

I do agree it is shocking when indiscriminate breeding leads to this sort of situation - but what planet are you on OP? You say they are not being put to sleep but going for dog meat???? Sorry - but they ARE being PTS - what happens to them after that is neither here nor there really is it?

Not having a go at you - it upsets me but we have to be realistic, better they are dealt with now rather than face a very uncertain future being sold off for stupidly low prices and then shipped live for thousand of miles to face the meat market in other countrys.

Better off as lion supreme as opposed the dire straights they are in right now.
Well placed bullet versus being hit by a car or worse.... no competition in my view.

I *think* what OP meant about not being PTS was either that
- PTS is to put an incurably ill horse out of pain (and these may not be in that state yet)
or
- PTS by injection rather than bullet

In an ideal world there would certainly be better futures for these horses. But we need to ensure there are fewer horses (and probably some kind of compulsory regulations around ownership or perhaps facilities where horses may be legally kept?) first.

Very sadly this may be the best option for these animals.

If you want people to be free to eat meat and/or keep carnivores in zoos or keep smaller ones as pets then you need to accept slaughter. Of intelligent emotionally sensitive animals.

I'm happily vegan but if I kept lions they wouldn't be!

Thank god the rspca are actually getting off their fat, well paid backsides, and taking some affirmative action for a change.

I hate the thought of healthy horses being slaughtered.

I would be happier if a charity such as RSPCA supervised the humane destruction, rather than horses finished up in a market and went who knows where.

It totally breaks my heart that these animals have ended up being discarded like old sofas. Ideally, they would all go to caring, stable, knowledgable homes but frankly that's a pipe dream. So, in order to stop their suffering as soon as possible, I see no other option tragically. The sanctuaries are bursting and the very idea of them ending up at one of the markets fills me with absolute horror. If human beings used the brains that they are credited with having, we wouldn't be in this situation. But that's human beings for you - nice aren't we?

As sad as it is, people do have to be realistic and if it means that horses, no matter how lovely they are, are going to have a secure fate rather than be passed from pillar to post or worse then so be it. It is a terrible thing to happen but at least they will not suffer after.

I live in Swansea area, too, and beside a relatively large common where quite a few horses wander about. They tend to tether one or two and leave the younger/quieter ones to waner, assuming they will stay with the 'herd'. I never really understood the idea of tethering horses- I fundamentally disagree with the practice, regardless of what RSPCA see as 'reasonable and safe'.

Anyway, in my humble opinion any horse seen without a person should be claimed by the RSPCA or the council. In an ideal world they could seperate the sick/old/injured/crazy ones from the relatively sane and sound ones, and rehome them, but if they have to PTS, its better than spending their lives on a rope. If dogs were seen tied up on the common, or wandering, they would be claimed. Why is it allowed for horses? One day I'm going to get something really strange, like a python or pot bellied pig and tether it on the common just to see if its acceptable (totally kidding, I'd never be so cruel!)

But if they offered me one of the horses outside my window I would take him in a heartbeat!!! :D

what I was thinking was that being pts was upsetting because good healthy horses were being killed for dog meat when I am sure there would be good homes available for them rather than them ending up as dog meat. At the end of the day the horses should be looked after, they should be taken btw the RSPCA have known what they were going to do for a long while now so they should have got them asap and tried to find loving homes for them especially if all sanctuaries are full as you say. If there is no other option then yes the kindest thing to do would be to put them to sleep.

LOL @ my wording! I know it doesn't matter what happens to them after they are dead if they are dog meat or not! I know I should have re-worded sorry. I was upset that people can just buy horses for a couple of pound and leave them to defend for themselves. I am glad the RSPCA are finally getting up and doing something about this situation, though they have known about this for a long long time so I was hoping the healthy horses would have had a chance at re-homing and then if this was not the case then yes being pts was the best thing to do. What im shocked and angry at is that these people were buying and selling thier horses so cheaply anyone could own them, they are in awful care too. I think there should be a LAW/enoforcement etc used and people who are having thier horses taken away should be banned from any further owning of horses and the areas regulary checked after this. I doubt rounding the horses and and putting them to sleep is going to stop these people buying horses in the future. Further action is needed as its the horses who are suffering not the owners. So I was raging at the people basically getting away with it and the horses being pts regardless of health due to there being no real law about owning a horse. I hope that makes sense :)
