My 2 mares are starting to become inseperable. How sweet I thought!

But now it's turning into a nightmare.

My older mare attempted to jump out of her field shelter (over a 4ft high wall) 8 weeks ago, just because I'd taken the youngster out of eyesight for a second.

The attempted escape all ended in tears (mine), as she got stuck over the wall, and impaled herself over the post holding it all up. Cut her stomach open and was in a bad way for weeks.

I'm now back to riding her, 2 weeks in, and she's fine in that respect.

Field shelter now broken, being mended when Dad and I have the time, including filling the whole thing in including a grill for the door so no more escapes can happen.

In the meantime, I can only ride the youngster if I tie the older girl to the hedge so she can see us at all times.

The youngster will just about stay in her field where I left her, as long as when I'm riding the other, we mill around within eyesight, which is hardly practical.

It's driving me mad

I have a shetland gelding, have had him for 18yrs and it seems that no one loves him any more as I can take him anywhere and nobody even notices!!

I keep them all at the bottom of a farm with no one else around.

Can only hack with both of them if I can persuade a friend to come with me - only a brave few will, as toss up between a 'spooker of the year'

and a 4yr old!!!

I'm getting to the end of my tether. It's all getting too much.

I've almost decided to sell the youngster. TBH I don't like riding her - probably because she needs to hack, and all I can do is lunge or attempt schooling. She's also rather - ahem...broad, and my hips are killing me (Is that a sign of old age??

But I adore her as she's a lovely sweet person. She's 4yrs old and I've had her 2 years.

Do I give up ?

So do I !! He's been No.1 companion to older mare for 14yrs. Where's her loyalty??

Happened to my mare and her field mate last year. The other mare would call out for her non-stop until we took her back... having a third horse in the field helped.

If you can bring yourself to sell the young one then I would, this bond will only be broken by splitting them up permanently and out of earshot of each other. You can't have them risking serious injury again. I know how you feel as my mare was like this with my husbands horse.
