I attempted to do the Unaffiliated SJ a the stables today as something to focus the boyo.

Well, I don't think I want to jump ever again :(. It was so disasterous it was laughable!

He was fine coming up from the field - I rode bareback with his bridle and nose net on as its a LONG walk from field. He was fine, in fact he was happy.

Gave him a groom and tacked up. Got on, got in the warm up arena and thats where it all started to go horribly horribly wrong. He was excited, VERY excited and dancing along. I htink he would have tanked off if he could. We had a walk and a trot round then had to go walk course, came back and did 2 practise jumps which were actually v good. I only ever do 2 as any more and he used to then be a tit in the ring.

Well, got in and it was like someone had canned him with a stick, head up, bit of flappy flappy head but got a nice enough canter went to the first fence and I was like come one come one, then the engine stalled :(. He was like "OMG thats a jump!" And it was a SIMPLE one to :(.

So we tried again and got over it, then got over number 2 then no3 came and he stopped, 2nd attempt he ran out so I went ot retire and they said I could try to continue so we took his nose net off and I borrowed a crop to back up my leg (visually, never have to use it), and he stagged it. then did 4 iun a stag fashion and then ran out at 5.

Thing is that I don't know if it is him or me! I was full blown ****ting myself with nerves - I don't know why as I KNOW I can do it! But there were proper jumping folk there and I was dressed in my dirty scruff jods etc. And boyo is fab at reading his rider, and I am pretty sure I have messed up his head now by saying go and stop at the same time all the way round.

I jsut feel soo defeated as I have only ever not been placed on him once :(. I know its not about the winning, I just feel I let him down! However I did stay on, so thats a bonus!

Unfortunately I don't think it will be as good as new, not with this head shaking :(. I had almost a BAR of chocolate and some choc cake so feel a bit better. I had pulled his mane after as well so that took some of my frustration, as did making him all shiney :).

Now just need to get he confidence to tell YO that he is going to come home to my dads as he isn't getting any better and so is useless to them in the school.

Been there, had that happen, just take him for a walk round next time as it is an exciting time for horses and build up from there, but it sounds like you had a typical jumping round for a novice like the rest of us. I once had a glass of whisky, because my nerves were so bad, before I went in, had a clear until I turned him too sharp and we had a refusal!! SIGH!!!! But did win a £1 prize money still have it over 35 years later.:):):). Dont do yourself down or your horse, go and enjoy!!!:D:D:D:D:D:D

Ah yes, but have you tried the ladies tights over the nose, works for us, well 90% improvement, difference between riding or not riding, sorts out the flies and pollen problem for me, well him ;) fitted right he can still eat and drink.

Asda, £1.50 for 5 so cheap but effective, takes about 5 mins to fit but sooooooo worth it.

Thing is that we arent that novice - in that we have done it 20 odd times. However that was over 2 years ago. He did a fab round in dec with a girl from the yard and even got placed. And he jumped with my friend on Friday and was brilliant. We had a jumping lesson a few months ago and we were ace - not bad for nearly 18 months out of the saddle, its like today I was expecting the worst, and fearing it and so thats what I got :(

I dont usually get nervous nervous. I get nervous then the adrenaline hits me..........today it didnt :(.

Pedantic, that just sounds kinky!!

Wishful Thinker - can you try at the next event just aiming to get over the first jump and no further. Just in your head, nobody else needs to know your plan. You could then retire BUT if all went ok then aim for jump 2 and so on, but don't aim to get more than 1/2 way round. Whatever happens, you must retire at the halfway point. That way it is half as much of a challenge and you have a get out clause at each fence, you can say he felt uneven if you need an excuse.

That was the aim today, just to get round - and stay on (not that I fall off, jsut that I for some reason had a sense of dread). I am bothered in that we were soo bad, not bothered we didn't get round as such.

I actually am thinking that the cosmos was against me from the beginning - bus was late, police stopped the bus to get a passenger off, then he wouldnt catch for me and I thnk got a cracking headache.

I SHOULD have just gone for a hack in the woods!!
