Jst wanted to get my thoughts down on paper so to spk as I'm having a tough time with my horses ATM. First had to have my heart horse pts then soon after had to retire the horse I had got to get me riding again. So purchase horse number 3 whom I absolutely love to bits however he is proving more tricky the longer I have him. He's had me off several times the last time putting me in hospital for a week. I have come to the conclusion I'm not the rider i once was. My confidence has taken a serious dent n i jst can't seem to see a way forward. I'm still recovering n won't be riding at all for at least a couple of months. I feel like I've let him down as he's actually an amazing horse n I'm obviously not good enough for him. I'm jst gutted 😢

I'm so sorry you've had such a rotten time and that you're injured. Horses can be such heartbreakers.

Before anyone gets back on him I'd have a complete work up to make sure his increasing difficulty isn't due to saddle/teeth/other pain. If all clear maybe get a professional to start schooling before you get back on.

This has already been done before i started riding in the first place. I had one bad fall which which I think dented my confidence. And I'm now feeling he takes his confidence from his rider and he has become increasingly spooky which has led to several more falls.

Sorry you're having a tough time with your horses. That all sounds pretty unfortunate and stressful.

If the current riding horse isn't for you there is absolutely no shame in selling him on and getting something less sharp (assuming vet work up rules out a physical cause). Sales livery might be an option if you've had your confidence knocked. Lots of people change the sort of horse that they enjoy riding as they go through life, and it really is no failing on your part. I used to like big horses with lots of movement, but these days I'm much more into the workmanlike movers...I have zero interest anymore in a simple spook being a launch type situation.

Sorry to hear you've been injured. It might be best to consider rehoming the horse or finding a suitable person to share. Hope you recover quickly and are all better soon.

I'm so sorry to hear you're having a right time of things at the moment :(

Regarding your current horse - there's no shame in popping him up for sale and getting something more suitable. When I was younger I used to get a buzz from riding all the spunky types who'd rear, buck, bolt etc, but a few bad falls, coupled with a reality check mean that now I prefer a chilled sort of ride. I don't mind the odd spook here and there - but something that has a reputation for being a chronic bucker/rearer I now actively avoid. I also used to love the big flashy warmbloods with extravagant movement - now I prefer the smooth and more workmanlike type of horses - not much has changed in my riding career apart from a few bad falls and me getting about 15 years older x

Would sending him to a trusted professional for some work while you recover be an option and then some lessons with them to to help regain your confidence once you are better be another option?

Honestly im not sure, i bought him from a professional n he's never really misbehaved for him(I've known the horse and rider for 2 years) this is why I'm feeling he takes his confidence from his rider. Horse is big and young

Just wanted to echo what others have said that selling him isn't a failure. Riding is meant to be enjoyable and fun and ending up in hospital is not fun.

I bought my daughter a pony in Jan and he needed confidence from her and after a couple of falls she just couldn't give it to him and things were getting worse and he was spooking more and making her more terrified.

I was having him schooled and he was perfect and I could ride him no problems at all just the connection between my daughter and him wasn't right.

We've just sold him and his new rider is doing really well on him.

He was lovely but just not right for my daughter . It felt like such a burden but once I had decided we weren't keeping him for my daughter I felt like a weight had been lifted. I was relieved, she was relieved and all has worked out well.

Im jst heartbroken bout the whole situation. 💔

I totally get the heartbreak. I couldn't stop crying and I think a big sense of loss is the loss of the things you had deemed of/hoped to have achieved.

My daughter has a different pony now and the smile on her face says it all and reflecting back I realise just how unhappy/scared she was.

You really don't want to be lying in hospital injured no matter how beautiful your horse is. To be blunt no horse is worth that.

Someone on HHO gave me some advise when I had a massive wobble of confidence - ride the horse that you need NOW!

It sounds like you and the horse are not a good match - there is no shame in coming to that conclusion.

Can you send him back tot he pro you bought him from while your recuperating? With the aim to see if he returns to the horse you bought and then either sell or (depending what your aim is) ride him from that yard with the pro riding in between?

Is it that he was worked hard while at the pro yard and you maybe aren't giving him the work he requires to keep him sane? or is his routine (with you) not conducive to the calm horse you recognise from the pro yard? Some horses need a lot of structure in their lives and others don't.

None of the above is a dig at you, just what I've seen over the years. I hope you make a speedy recovery and are back in A saddle soon - one you are comfortable to sit in!

It's a hobby so remember it is meant to be fun - for both horse and rider!

He has alot more turn out with me so thought that would have the opposite effect. He's actually a bit of a steady Eddie but then he'll have a spook at something n he's off.

So have made the heartbreaking decision to sell my big boy on. The chap I bought him off is going to help me sell him n find the best home for him. I'm gutted but know deep down it's for the best for me and him. He has far too much potential n would be wasted with me n at my age I cannot take another bad fall. Then I need to start the hunt for something new...feel sick at the thought of it
