Anyone who wants to tow seriously ought to have a real towbar. People are so silly lke that. Friends of ours didn't want them on their range rovers in case it devalued them - how silly! I guess I've never thought like that as our cars are for life, paid for outright and run into the ground!
True. However vosa and trading standards are involved here. We use landys, including a disco 3 for towing heavy trailers and it was in fitting ours and researching that we found the standard hitch height of 14.5" is too low for most double or triple axle trailers and the advice we got from landrover was that it is legal to fit an adjustable towing ladder with only 2 bolts as the holes on the LR ladder don't match the chassis holes. That is a scary scenario. The witter height adjustable arrangement is the safest way to go.
As an ex-Discovery owner, I just think it's really funny that on the internet somewhere, there's an entire forum dedicated to slagging off Discoveries.
I didn't post this to slag discos. I posted it to raise awareness of detachable or underrated towing arrangements. There are similar threads on the disco owners forums.
I would strongly recomend that if you have one of these tow bars that for the safety of all concerned you have it replaced by a good quality fixed tow bar. I also recomend having an anchor chain attached to both trailer and rear member of vehicle just in case trailer ever becomes detached. The senario of a trailer with horses in it becoming detached from the tow vehicle is just to terrible to contemplate.
I cannot believe that anyone would tow an animal in a trailer using a detachable tow bar....it just sounds like far too much of an accident waiting to happen, fault or no fault. You need a solid fitted tow bar. My scenic has one as the last owner towed a caravan, but its sturdy as I have so far accidentally partially knocked down 2 small walls with it and its still attached (but I would NOT use it to tow without a thorough check)
