Apologies I realise this has probably been asked 101 times but would really appreciate some quick advice!

Thoughts on towing a deauville Bateson trailer carrying 1 horse (approx weight 550kg) with a 2007 land rover freelander 2.2 td4?

Thanks in advance!

What licence do you have - B or B+E ?

What is the towing capacity of the FL ? - max towing weight on the V5 form

The empty weight of the trailer is 860
the horse is 550
That totals 1410 actual weight being towed plus a little bit more possibly so a 1500 towing capacity would really be needed

Look up your exact model on Parkers.co.uk (or similar) as the towing capacity varies between models. I tow a Bateson Ascot +1 horse (400kg) with my 57 plate Freelander. My model has a max towing capacity of 2000kg, but some are less. It manages very well. In fact I prefer towing with it than I did with my old Disco.

I tow a Bateson Ascot with my Freelander 2. It tows really well, I only tend to tow 1 horse though. My only issue has been that my Freelander "fell" out of 4 wheel drive recently whilst towing - a big clunk and then errors came up. Turns out it had gone into 2 wheel drive!! We're hoping its now fixed... but it is a bit worrying, hope it wasnt the towing that did it as its going out again on Sunday!

Many thanks everyone! ROG I currently only have my car licence so will be towing with a parent next to me until I take the trailer test hopefully this year.

I've checked and the towing capacity on the car is 2000kg and I should also say that my trailer has been downplated to 1600kg.

I'm going to test drive one today so feeling positive now!

Thanks!

What is the GVW of the freelander ? = max permissible weight on the V5 form OR the top figure of four on the weight plate usually hidden under the bonnet or in a door frame

Or get a vehicle with a lower GVW ...........

My last car had a lower GVW and I could tow on my car licence (hence why the trailer has been down plated) but I now want something a bit sturdier so I can feel more confident travelling further distances rather than just local shows. Usually either my mum or dad comes with me to groom anyway, so I can get away with them sitting with me for a few months I think!
