Sorry, I agree. The Freelander isnt up to the job. You could possibly get away with towing a small horse and a 505. I could be wrong but I think it can tow 1500kg, your trailer is just under 1000kg so doesnt leave much left.
Thanks for the unanimous advice! Have decided to go for a Shogun instead - it tows 3300kg! So I can go for an HB510/510Classic if anyone knows of a tidy one for sale? Am selling my 3-horse lorry for £5400 if there are any takers out there....? (very nice lorry!)

Ever compared the power outputs of the 2 vehicles? The new Freelander has marginally more torque than the new Defender engine, and only marginally less power. So whilst the Defender has a higher tow limit than the Freelander it's actually a lot slower and less economical for a given tow weight as it's a much heavier vehicle.
Don't have one myself but have friends who tow 2 Highlands in a 505 with a Freelander no bother.
And Shoguns are rubbish. They were once one of the best 4x4s but everyone else moved on and they did not. Strong and reliable granted, but off the pace in every other way.
