And why? Is manual really better for fuel efficiency? Am I likely to make stupid mistakes towing in a manual (only towed in auto before though took b&e test in manual).

Auto, better all round and the modern auto's are getting better on fuel too!!! most big
lorries are auto to save fuel , less chance of jerking so a beter ride for the horses and more relaxing for the driver esp in stop start trafic..so for me auto by choice but manual
is fine if I have too!!

Well a manual defender will get you out of muddy hole better than an automatic range rover.

Can't speak for Range Rovers but I tow (and regularly drive across VERY muddy fields) in my old auto Pajero and it is amazing - by the time you put it in low box diff lock and bottom gear it sails through deep mud. And for towing on the road, it gives an easier ride than a manual - and an easier drive for me. Of course it does have big low pressure tyres - and tyres are probably more important than the manual/auto debate when it comes to crossing winter fields that are ankle deep in mud!

The tyres will be a great part of it the RR is the 4.2 supercharged I don't think land rover expected it to be used for pulling trailers plus hunters out of wet holes
It does do it I have never got stuck but the defender is an amazing tool.
However eight hour trip the auto RR will win hands down for comfort.
