I’m switching from a lorry back to a 4x4 and trailer. I’ve had a good look at 4x4’s and my two favourite are the BMW X5 and the Mercedes ML. Any reviews on either?

I love my ML250, I tow a heavy caravan with it and hardly notice it's there. Can't comment on the X5 other than to say I'd never drive a BMW haha.

We had an ML, it was lovely to tow with, but we did have to add the tow bar ourselves and is was not a factory fitted thing
We ended up swapping to a HiLux as the carpet everywhere in the ML was a nightmare to keep clean 😁

Used to tow with the older X5 and really liked it. Never had a problem getting out of muddy fields and I used to tow all over the country taking daughter to TREC competitions. It did used to get through tyres though. Eventually we had to get rid of it as all the electrics started going wrong. We would have liked a newer one but they were out of price range so now have a VW Touareg, which is also very good. We did quite a bit of research as husband wanted a nice car for when not towing, and I needed something capable of towing 2 horses, which the Touareg does with ease as it has more towing power than the BMW and as much as a Discovery.

We towed with an ML . It was fabulous, I didnt realise the trailer was there . We ended up changing to a Nissan Navara , only because hubby didn’t want the ML getting scratched / covered in horse hair etc etc . I’m not a fan of BMWs at all.

I tow with a BMW X5 and it is very nice, don't really know trailer is on the back. When I was looking for a BMW X5 I could not find one anywhere in the country that had a tow bar so you might have to have one put on. Try not to go to a BMW garage because as I found out it cost over £2,000 to have it all done properly with the electrics.

Never had an ml but had several mercs and the customer service is shockingly bad, BMW s I find very heavy to drive, so have a drive of both and you may find one stands out to you... I drove all of the 4x4 s when I bought my last car and the Volvo won by a country mile ... but we do also have a defender if I need to tow up to 3.5 tonnes
