The other smaller type 4x4 have a better capacity of 2000kg, I personally would chose one if them, rav 4, freelander, Kia (can't remember it's name). You'll need to know the weight of the trailer (anything from 750kg-1000kg possibly more?) and horse (up to 600kg? Allow for more) and anyone in the car, any stuff in the car. If go for a bit more. Any reason for that car over the others of the same type?

Im looking at a Vauxhall Antara 4x4 which has a towing capacity of 1700kg. Would this be suitable for a trailer and a 16.2 sports horse..????
Vauxhall Antara SE 2.2 CDTi 4x4 Auto
Gross Weight 2370 kg
Kerb Weight 1861 kg
Towing Limit (braked) 1700 kg

Horse 650 kgs with a trailer that weighs no more than 1000 unladen will be fine

I would consider something like these =
BATESON LIGHT HORSE TRAILER
CHEVAL LIGHT HORSE TRAILER
IFOR LIGHT HORSE TRAILER

Requires to be driven under B+E licence rules

I have a cheval with a weight of just over 750kg, I like it though I have 2 questionmark issues, firstly it's hard to get parts (my experience) I want a single breast and back bar (all the way across) and have tried myself and the people who service it for me have tried, haven't yet been able to. So if u want anything you haven't got make sure you have it straight away with the purchase (fir this make) The only other thing is that it doesn't feel as tough as Ifors. I did an emergency stop once (idiot pulled out and u-turned in front if me) thankfully I was doing about 20mph. The horse I was towing broke both the back and front bars and was sat down. On getting up and obviously throwing herself around a bit I felt the trailer wasn't as solid as I'd like. It did withstand it though! I only tow a horse I know to be a good traveler.
If you get a 750kg trailer and allow 700kg for horse then you should be ok as long as you don't fill the car with stuff and people too much.

This towing lark has got out of hand, I reckon. You need a ton of money for a 4x4 which are normally crap to drive and really unreliable, not to mention tax and insure.

For the amount of times I now cart a horse about I hire a box, as and when.

Rog, I'm allowing total weight like a box, Lol if that's not necessary then great :)
The towing vehicle has its own max weight limit (GVW) as does the trailer (MAM)

There is also a maximum total weight limit for the two together (GTW)

Manufacturers will usually list a max towing capacity but that in itself is not a legal requirement

In most, but not all, cases the GVW added to the towing capacity will be the GTW

Ok great (I have an old licence so not had to do a trailer test if this info is covered on that?) where do I find the GVW?
Licences make no difference to the vehicle and trailer max weight laws but do restrict what the driver can do in regards to them

GVW or max permitted mass can be found on a plate in the vehicle or on the registered keepers V5 form
