This week I'll be hitching the trailer up for the first time on my own. I've towed quite a few times on my own, but have never hitched up on my own, I borrow a friend's box at the moment and she is always there to talk me through it and check everything is ok before I set off. She's gone away this week however, so I'll be going solo.

Anyway, eventhough I know I'll be ok, I wanted to get a checklist of the things I have to run through when hitching up just for my own peace of mind. I've looked on the internet, but can't find such a list. Does anyone know where I could print one from?

Thanks for reading this far :)

hitch up, jockey wheel wound up and then pulled up and tightened, breakaway cable attatched, handbrake off, electrics plugged in and checked, check all locks etc on ramps and doors and away you go:)

I find it handy to jam a whip behind the rear wiper so it sticks up vertically above the tow hitch, then when reversing you can line that up with the centre of your trailer.

Good idea about the whip, I'll try that next time. I always count how many things I have to do at the towbar end of the car/front area of trailer after I've hitched up, before driving off and that's five for me. 1. Jockey wheel up and tightened. 2. Breakaway cable. 3. Electrics. 4. Internal hitch lock in if you have one. 5. Unlock jockey door so I don't forget. Also don't forget to remove wheelclamps, which I do before hitching up and I check no flat tyres at the same time. You should check lights work once you've done the connecting up.
