I read somewhere that if you cannot tow a trailer on your licence, that you can if you have L Plates and have someone sat with you who has passed their test more than 3 years ago (and is allowed to tow)

can anyone tell me if this is true?

Yes it is true. It's how I got round it until I sat my test

yes you can,
aslong as you have L plates, a legal driver beside you who is legal to tow, fully insured etc. and you can pull a horse as long as the horse weighs no more than 3/4 tonne even with L plates on
( i rang the drving standards agency! cos i wanted to know!)

happy driving

Just an aside as I am over 70 I cannot drive a 7.4 tonnes lorry without a Medical every year. But on my licence I can tow up to 8 tons gross train weight which is actually more difficult.
