with a new policy we are thinking of taking out with tescos, they offer only third party insurance when towing, not fully comprehensive insurance

is this normal??

just wondered whether this was sufficient

Yes that is the norm.

Under a private car policy you will get third party cover only for the trailer meaning that any damage you cause with the trailer will be covered but there is no cover for damage to the actual trailer itself.

If you want to cover damage for the trailer as well you will need to take out a separate policy - you can usually add it to your horse insurance policy.

As to whether TP cover is sufficient - it obviously depends on the value of the trailer & whether you are prepared to foot the bills yourself for any damage to it?!
