Is it legal to tow a trailer (eg a caravan) behind a horsebox, when that horsebox only has a rear ramp.

Obviously, it's not overly-practical having to unhitch a trailer in order to drop a ramp, but you do see people towing...

Any ideas?

But is it legal?

I suppose the safety aspect would depend on what you were towing to an extent. A little trailer that could be pulled off in 20 seconds might not be that bad when compared with a 20ft caravan, for example.

It's interesting to those who compete, especially in things like horse driving trials where accomadation (for horse and humans) and transportation of a carriage are both essential aspects of any travelling outfit.

It is legal but there are weight and length restrictions. If they go over a certain length and weight you have to have a class 2 I beleive.

Your best bet would be to have a look on the DVLA website.

It is legal, but you must be careful of the combined weight and what your tow vehicle and driving licence legally allow you to pull.

Hello

Thanks for your answers

My question isn't about all the weights, dimensions and licence entitlements, though. It's more about towing whist you have a horse or pony in the box, that can only get in and out using a rear ramp (and therefore, the trailer gets in the way).

I didn't know if there are rules about this kind of thing.

There are no regulations which take into consideration the exits of a towing vehicle..

There are numerous safety implications, which you are aware of in your above reply. And in the event of an accident taking place, the likes of VOSA and your insurance company would not look favourably upon your actions of blocking the only exit by towing.

However.... it would be legal to tow with a vehicle which only has a rear exit ramp....subject of course to compliance with the regulations re overall size/weight
