Ok, Ive decided I want to have the freedom to go out on my own without relying on dad being around. (Im 23)

Ive pretty much accepted that I need to do my towing test (I would be driving dads SsangYong Rexton, towing my Old Rice trailer)

BUT everytime I talk to anybody and say "im going to do my test" I get shocked looks and "WHY??? You don't NEED to to tow one horse??!!!!!" Its driving me up the wall! Lol. I really wish it was more black and white, its FAR too complicated. TBH I would prefer if it was as I originally thought, in that EVERYONE who passed after that date would have to do a test to tow anything. At least then it would be clear.

I was told tonight that as long as it doesn't go over 3500kg that I could do it, and that if I went to a weighbridge, then no one could touch me for it :S but Im 99% certain that there is more to it then that.

So Im just going to stop talking to people at the yard/friends etc about it I think

Go to Rog's towing clinic. (Competition section, there's a sticky on the top) the only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that you have to have the trailer down plated (but check I may be getting my terms mixed up) so their maximum weight can't go over what you are allowed as a B licence holder. It'd be better to get your licence anyway as then you could tow 2 if needed (depending on your car) you'll probably need it at some point so why not go for it straight away? I'm old so I have it on my old licence :)

Thanks :) How would you downplate a trailer? Do you just go to a normal trailer centre? (I assume though, if I did that, then the trailer could never hold two horses again? Which wouldn't be ideal, as sometimes dad could take me and another horse out)

I think I will do my test :) It would be nice to be able to go out with friends (not that I have any horsey friends :/ Lol)
Also, having watched a few people try to reverse (people who can legally because of WHEN they passed) I think I would rather have the tuition :)

There are many who think that as long as the actual weight is not over 3500 then its legal but that is from those who are not correctly informed

The extra rule for B licence towing of a trailer over 750 kgs plated MAM is ...
The vehice GVW added to the the trailer plated MAM must not total more than 3500 kgs

I wish the Gov sites etc would put it that way cos its simple

A trailer not more than 3500 kgs can only be down plated by the manufacturer that built it so if they have gone out of business then it cannot be down plated

A trailer that has been down plated can be up plated by the manufacturer

The relevant legislation is the construction and use regulations and they say nothing of the kind.

Try emailing VOSA and especially DVLA for a definitive for the driving licence laws on this

That is what I did to get the legal answers for the driving licence law
