Towing on an International Licence

Has anyone here towed a horse trailer on an international licence?

I have spoken with the DVLA and they've told me that I can tow a horse trailer (equivalent to B+E) on my foreign licence as long as my foreign licence entitles me to do it back home (it does).

I have spoken with the company I would use to insure my 4x4 and trailer and they are comfortable insuring me on this basis as long as I have the proper UK licences before my 12 month grace period is up.

All that aside, is there anything else I should consider? Has anyone done this so can offer advice? My fear is that someone will run into me while I'm towing my horse and I'll end up with legal and insurance problems!

Also, do you know of a place in Scotland that offers towing instruction? I know that there are two day courses offered around the UK but don't know of any locally.
 
Weirdly enough, when my husband exchanged his licence after 12 months, he was given B+E on his new UK licence....but not C1, so he has a licence as if he has a post 1997 UK licence but has taken his trailer test....
Sorry, know that not much help but you might not need to do your towing test after 12 months?
 
Actually, that is hugely helpful. Can you tell me a bit more? For example, your husband was able to exchange his licence. Does that mean that he is Canadian (as I am?) Did he get a full B+E or did he have to take an automatic licence?

Going with a trailer means that I will be able to transport my horse before having my UK licence (which will take several months) so it might be my best option. I'd really like to avoid having a period of time (after B and before B+E) when we'd be stranded again.
 
No, he is South African. Was really weird, as I even asked the DVLA what he would get entitlement for on his UK licence as he passed his test (in SA) before 1997, so I asked would he get a licence as if he had passed his test here prior to '97 or as if he had passed since, and they said the latter, so we were very surprised when it turned up with B+E on it! I took my test here in '98 so I have done my trailer test and HGV, so originally had just B, then added B+E and now C, and his licence now looks like mine did prior to taking the HGV. Nt sure if it was a mistake on their part but iritating that they didn't put C1 on as well as we have now upgraded to a lorry!
Being South African he had a manual licence in the first place so can't help you on that.
 
OK i think it may be differnt as my dad is from within the EU, but my dad exchanged his belgian liscence for a UK one and got all of his entitlements (including the tank one and the C1, PSV and B+E)
