Towing safety- lightweight trailer or not?

Hi all,

I'm new to the world of towing (will be doing my test next week) and my new company car arrives in Jan. It's a VW Tiguan 4WD with a towing capacity of 2200kg. Obviously not a monster truck, so I will just be towing my 480kg connie.

Looking at trailers now as hoping to get a better deal mid winter. Am I better off going for one of the lighter trailers aka Bateson Derby, Chevals etc so that my overall towing weight is less and no where near its max? Or do these tend to be a bit less stable if something goes wrong? Excuse the ignorant question!!
 
2200 is pretty standard :) I don't think there is any more danger with them, cause the weight of the horse weighs it down.

Do you have a B+E licence or just B ??

Hope that link works- it's the S version 4WD. I have a B lisence currently but will be doing my test and course next week- I know I could just about tow on my B lisence but I think I could only do it with the Bateson Derby trailer and they seem impossible to find second hand!

On a B licence the max the trailer can be plated at is 1270 kg because the car GVW is 2230 kg so any horse trailer would need down plating

No probs with a B+E licence
