I have a new Vectra Estate car which states that it's towing capacity is 1300kg.

Does 1300kg mean that i can tow upto 1300kg - hope that doesnt sound like a silly question.

The horse i am buying is 500kg and the Ifor Williams trailer is 625kg which means total = 1125kg.

Does that mean i am ok with towing that with the Vectra?

Thank you.

Yes, 1300kg is the max you can tow with the vectra. The total weight of the trailer - i.e. not what you will carry, but what the trailer is capable of carrying, will tell you if you can legally tow. There should be a plate on the trailer that will tell you the MAM (Max. Authorised Mass) - if this is more than the Vectra allows, then no, you cannot tow legally even if you are carrying less than 1300kg. Not many cars are capable of LEGALLY pulling a trailer; I see loads driving around that should not be towing horses!!

no. that would be illegal. your ifor williams will prob have a max gross weight of something like 2340kg, regardless of how much you actually put in the trailer, thats the amount your vehicle needs to be able to tow.

If you have a pre 1997 licence or have passed your towing test then yes, you will be fine, although I'm not sure I would like to tow with Vectra Estate personally.

Hi,

Like the above poster said, it doesn't matter if your car can pull 1000kg and your trailer is 100kg and your horse 100kg (all hypothetically speaking of course..lol) it matters that your car can pull more than the MAM. So basically - Your car has to be able to pull more than what your trailer can tow.

So heres my eg. My Car can pull 2800kg My trailer can carry 2300kg So I am fine, as my car can pull more than my trailer can carry... If your trailer can pull 2300kg but your car can only pull 1300kg than it woulld be illegal for you to pull with it (even though your car can pull the horse and trailer) you would have to get your trailer replated to a lower MAM, so say 1100kg, then your car being able to pull with 1300kg would be OK!

I am not very good at pointing out the obvious, so apologies for confusing you even more!

Plus, I wouldn't fancy towing with anything but my 4x4.x

Sorry your EG stinks because its rubbish !!!! its what your car can tow and what the trailer weighs with its load as long as its under the capacity of the tow vehicle you are ok....

This has a lot of useful info on it.

"The maximum laden weight of a trailer which may be towed by a light goods vehicle depends on both the stated gross train weight of the towing vehicle (GTW) and the vehicle manufacturer's recommended maximum permissible trailer weight. Neither the maximum permissible trailer weight or the maximum gross train weight (the laden weight of the trailer plus the laden weight of the towing vehicle) should be exceeded. It is possible that the stated gross train weight is less than the sum of the stated maximum permissible laden weight of the towing vehicle and the stated maximum permissible laden trailer weight. In this case the towing vehicle and the trailer must be loaded such that each does not exceed its individual maximum limit and the sum of both does not exceed the maximum gross train weight."

so why your first erroneous post????

lol, some people clearly feel very strongly about this! perhaps you should tell VOSA and the DVLA who confirmed this on sitting a recent towing test..... mind you, it doesnt matter to me, I know Im keeping myself right.
