Hiya,

so finally decided to sell our gorgeous Vauxhall Frontera as its heating up everytime it tows... does anybody else have this problem? Would expect it to be a little bit hotter but it gets all the way up to the red and panics my mum. we've had it all checked out, and the trailer checked but nothing wrong!?!

so decided to get something else- any suggestions on whats best? Lots of people i've spoken to have said discoveries.

anybody know much about Kia Sorento's? found one online last night and looks quite cheap so might go have a look.
- 2.4L Diesel
- Red- but our trailer is blue hehe will that clash?
- 30,000 miles,
- 1 year MOT
- £9,295

what do you think?

I can't tell you from first-hand experience, but I did notice on holday that the German Police tow around pairs of massive warmbloods with VW vans.

The VW Transporter van comes in van, minibue/people carrier form, both of which will have more room than a 4x4; or even in campervan form (instant living!)

I looked it up and the T4 version (1990 - 2004 ish) can tow 2,000 kg; the T5 (current version) can tow up to 2,500 kg.

Just a thought.

I did a quick google search and here is a link to show what I mean: http://www.polizeiautos.de/show_one.php?id=2042

They do come in 4x4 form, called "Syncro" in VW marketing speak.

EDIT: The people carrier ones are called VW Caravelle.

Oddly its spec doesn't seem to have any max towing weights but then says:

Trailer with brakes: 3000kg manual 3500kg auto
Trailer no brakes 750kg 750kg

Don't know if your trailer is braked or not, but it seems to make a difference.

ETA VW Transporter vans are brill for towing! I'm pretty sure their Caravelle is the same thing but with seats etc, not a sexy looking thing, but very practical. I sold my IW 505 to a guy with one and he went everywhere with his two horses.

Any trailer that has a maximum weight over 750 kg has to have brakes by law. Therefore, all horseboxes will have brakes.

Unbraked trailers rely totally on the tow car to slow it down, braked trailers have brakes on their wheels which come on when a mechanism in the towing hitch "feels" the towcar slowing down.

I have a Kia Sorento, for comparison on price I paid £10k for it at Xmas 3 yrs old with 24k on the clock. It's the top of the range model. Parkers or similar would be your best bet to check on prices. Great car and tows well.

Members of the VW Transporter custom community and many water sports enthusiasts may disagree with that.

i have used 3 different 4x4 for towing, jeep cheroke, not bad but personally did not like the car itself, isuzu trooper, loved it very strong and sturdy, although do rust badly underneath and have problems with cylinider heads my current car is a shogun and i love it, tows very well, would highly recommend also comes in green, white, blue and red!!

I'm on my second Kia Sorento. It's super for towing

Would highly recommend it. Tows 2 horses in an Ifor Williams HB505 with ease. For the money there's not much to compare with it.

Only ever heard good reviews for the Kia Sorento but they are a relatively new car so no idea of how well they last.

I have an isuzu trooper, had one previously and love em, tows 3.3 tonnes so no problem with horse trailers!

Disoverys and most land rovers have rust problems but tow well!

Heard good reviews about shoguns but never driven or had dealings with them.

Dont know but would advise NOT to get a VW Touareg - lots of thudding come from towing with one, of which VW hide their head in the sand over saying a "degree of noise is acceptable"...
