i am looking to buy something to tow a IW505 (only one horse) but it has to be something that i can use as my car during the week and then tow with at the weekend so really economical. Not too heavy as i have only got a 3.5 t licence, not too big i.e. prefer SWB as I do have city driving to do as my commute and cheap as i am a student!

Any advice would be brilliant. I had a ford maverick and it was brilliant but had to get rid of it as really bad corrosion underneath. Now I am stuck with a new IW505, lovely mare dying to get out and about and nothing to tow her with

Unfortunately towing a horse trailer & economy don't go hand in hand.It is unlikely you will get an economical vehicle that will tow & you can also use as a runaround which is cheap on fuel. If you find one.....please let us all know.

ive just recently been in exactly the same predicament, and i bought a rav 4 for this, for ONE HORSE only and a LIGHTWEIGHT trailer before i get bombarded and shouted at. i took everyones advice and walked away from the rav 4 but then i spoke to various toyota dealers (it was a private sale so they had nothing to gain from it) and then went to, wait for it, the caravanclub website for towing weights etc and went for it. im loving it, a mini 4x4 without being a gas guzzler, tonnes cheaper in value than my normal car (now up for sale if anyone wants a bargain - cant advertise on here tho so pm me) and i can still see out of the windows in it and get round the multistorey. good luck, its a tough decision.

Thanks for the advice. When i say economical I mean within reason. i was doing the commute with the maverick and that was in budget - I spend about 120 euro a week in petrol but was only spending about 60 in diesel with the maverick.

thewonderhorse do you find the rav 4 good then? I wouldn't have thought of them as I would never had considered it a towing evhicle. Which model ddo you have?
