im doing my trailer test in the summer, so going to need to upgrade my car, currently 206, to something to tow 510 ifor williams trailer and poss 2horses, so 2 tonnes. Got about 10,000 to spend, and also want it to be a coolish car as am only 20! any ideas... am dreaming of an X5 at the mo!!!!
thanks

liz the X5 when we looked at it could only pull 1.5 tonnes! it may have gone up but it was useless off road as well.

ok, thanks for that, i looked it up on the net and said it could tow 2600kg but will double check and think that through!

we did look at them new about 7 years ago so it may have changed but if your going for a 2nd hand one makesure you check for that particular year (hand book will always tell you)

i would have a black navara twin cab pick up with chrome bullbars and rollovers

Those Ssang Yong Rextons are quite nice. Not sure how much they go for second hand. Great thing about them is their 3500kgs maximum towing capacity!

I always wanted something along those kind of lines but the towing capacity is only 2700kg - my trailer at full capacity is 2600kg so theyre no good fo me

NIssan Terranos can tow around 2.5 tonnes, I think and look pretty cool to me. Lots on ebay

but check the tow weight

or a Pajero?

Rather than looking for something 'cool' can I suggest you go for something suitable. The X5 towing weight is around the 2600kg mark, but check individual models because it has been facelifted. Slightly newer versions had a stability control system which helped stop trailers from snaking (I think the car recognised when a trailer was snaking and adjusted accordingly or something like that). Also consider the kerbweight of the vehicle, you want this to be as high as possible by comparison to the trailers weight because it will help with stability, particularly on windy days or on steep hills.

We were once told that there are only four vehicles really suitable for towing 2 big horses in a big trailer, they were Isuzu Trooper, LR Discovery, Range Rover and LR Defender. However, personally I think Shoguns are probably ok too, as are Land Cruiser Amazons etc, which are just huge. Plenty of vehicles are legally up for it, and I see people using them, but I'm not convinced, such as Terranos. Go for the highest possible towing weight, because the suspension and chassis of these vehicles is designed for that pressure, so they are over-engineered for a 2000+kg trailer.

We have a Discovery TD5, you should be able to get one of these for your budget, it is the best vehicle we've ever used for towing, it doesn't notice you have a trailer on, and is so stable, even on windy days, or when coaches pass you on the motorway (a funny phenomina which occurs with coaches because they suck air along the side unlike lorries where the air can go underneath).

Try and get a LWB vehicle because many SWB vehicles suffer when a trailer is on the back because it removes pressure from the front tyres, thereby reducing their effectiveness and effecting your steering and braking. By comparison, a LWB vehicle has a different pivot point and so the front wheels will remain in contact with the road better, this is also useful for dragging trailers off muddy fields. If you can afford it go for a vehilce with a self levelling rear suspension, as this will maintain a level vehicle and equal contact on all four tyres on the road. LR Discovery TD5s have them if you can get a top of the range ES version (on all ages), or on GS and above models on the facelifted version from late 2002 (2003 model year). This is what we have and its great.
