Prob been done to death, but need recommendations of a good towing vehicle. Am booking in to do trailer towing course and test, so will need to upgrade vehicle *if* I pass (so any tips on the test too please :-)!)

I will be looking at getting either a bateson or CL, something a bit lighter weight as won't be towing 2 heavyweights! I use my vehicle as a run around to and from yard, and to the train station, so want to try and get something fairly economical, as well as not hideously expensive to insure or tax (is that even possible!!!). I was looking at a Disco, as seems to be insurance group 12 (current car is group 10), but not sure on how economical that would be. Oh and whatever I end up with needs to be able to pull the harrow round the field too, so something that can cope with a bit of mud! Reckon my budget for the car is going to be £3k max....possible???

How economical are they (fourtrak)? Have heard they are good towing vehicles, although cant see any for sale to get an idea of how much they sell for!!

I have a ford ranger. Love it as it goes anywhere and tows really well but it is hard on the juice.

Try a shogun - will pull anything and great in heavy mud and fairly reliable and easy to repair. Am fortunate enough to drive a top of the range 2 year old shogun elegance, but before that drove an older, battered model and loved it. Only replaced it because I use it for work as well and it started to look a bit shabby. Reckon you could pick up a good older one for around £3K, or a Pajero, which is basically the same vehicle. Insurance isnt too bad, nor is tax on the older ones. Would definitely buy another one.

Thanks for the link Kitsune.

Read somewhere that insurance was high on the Pajero's and Shogun's? Will check out Nissan Terrano's too! :-)

Ditto Fourtrak, I love mine, they are like golddust though, if you can find one for sale you will be very lucky. They do about 28 mpg. I am quite lucky as mine is our 3rd car just for towing and doing chorse around the field, i have an economical car for pottering around town etc

Just to throw one in here as an "alternative"...

I went to Germany the other year and many of their 17.2hh warmbloods are pulled around by VW transporter vans/mini buses. The German Mounted Police love them:

I imagine fuel economy is about the same as a medium 4x4, and they can tow 2000 kg. But you have much more room in the back and you can even use it as 'day living'.

Great idea, in my totally unqualified random opinion.

Isuzu Trooper! Got to be one of the best towing vehicles ever. Ours is a 3ltr turbo diesel and would pull a house down!

Have you thought about a toyota hilux? I currently have a shogun and its great but is expensive with the fuel. Borrowed my bros hilux while shogun at garage and loved it. So much power for towing, good on the fuel, smooth on road and great off road. Not sure about insurance or tax on it though.
