Hi. I’m looking for a vehicle that will tow a single lightweight cheval Liberte trailer with one 600kg horse. I want something about a year old but don’t want a big gas guzzler and I don’t want a diesel. The problem is that the SUVs I would have bought in the past are being built with smaller engines. I was thinking about a 2L Mazda Cx5. Any ideas?

We are picking up a Volvo V90 tomorrow and I'll be switching my box for a single cheval trailer. Should be really economical being a plug in hybrid but enough grunt for towing mode when needed.

I have to warn you of the issues with the cx5 diesel engines Mazdas well known for engine oil dilution which wrecks the engine.

So anything but that one

OP did say they didn't want a diesel. I'm completely unqualified to answer the question because I've only ever towed with diesels!

The Toyota Rav 4 plug in hybrid would do the job.

Tiguan has around 1800kg capacity see lots at horse shows does about 43mpg. friend tows with hers loves it, its a heavy car so you are not over the kerb weight (your load being around 1500kgs) or skoda karoq, kia sorento. You need something atleast 1800kg towing I would be looking for spare capacity in the bag. I found this outfit matcher helpful you can add the year and model - https://towcar.info/outfitmatch.php

EDIT - the mazda has 1600kgs so capacity to tow on lower end for suv of that size. The new foresters is also lower at 1600kgs.

Ive just bought a tiguan with 2L 4x4 after doing some research myself on options to tow 1 horse, it has a 2000kg capacity - though ive not put the tow bar on yet so cant speak from personal towing experience. I also looked at volvo x60. Couldnt stretch budget to bmw / audi but they might also do you, I didnt fancy the unreliability of LR discovery

We had an older Merc ML10 which was excellent at towing til we had light issues with the car and replaced it with a Toyota Landcruiser which is even better (it’s an old one!) but not sure if they’ll come in petrol. They’ll never let you down! Is there a Subaru estate that might do the job?
