Following on from the thread about towing with a rav4, could I tow a lightweight trailer and 14.1 arab, with a car that has towing capacity of 1200kg ; it also has 4wd? If i went for the lightest possible trailer, don't know what that weight would be?

My IW HB401 weighs 770kg. My Sec Dx mare is approx 425kg, so you may get away with it if your pony isn't too chunky.

The new 403 weighs 767kg, so not much difference there, and the Cheval Liberte 1003XL weighs about 650kg but is narrower than the 403. They also make a wider mare & foal trailer weighing 732kg which is wider than the 403 by about 20cm I think.

Not really sure about other makes as I haven't looked at them and I haven't read the other thread about the Rav4, but I think you may need to check very carefully before towing a horse with one.

short answer NO

never mind the weight of vehicle plus horse etc...... just look at the plate on the trailer and see what weight it says - more likely even on a single trailer will say 1500kg (mine does) I tow it with a freelander (towing cap 2000kg) so am legal - then i look at weights etc.

If trailer said 2340kg capacity (double ifor) - my car can physically tow the trailer 900kg plus one horse (and has done in an emergency) it but not legal because the plate says a vehicle with towing cap of min 2340kg must tow it.

I doubt you will find a trailer anywhere with a plate that says less than 500kg - basically because a horse plus trailer is going to weight virtually same as car! not good when towing.

Down plate the trailer- we did this ours as our car can only tow 1400kg. We tow at 90% so have a 1260kg capacity. With our 700kg trailer and my 408kg horse i'm perfectly legal as the trailer hdas been downplated. Ifor will even do it for you!

I wouldn't, no. I was under the impression that your car has to have a towing capacity of at least the trailer's max laden weight. I have a single Ifor and its max laden weight is 1900kg I think, therefore the car needs to be capable of towing at least this weight.

you couldnt get a single trailer downplated as already at its lowest capacity (one horse) you can a double cheval - however would you want to tow a 1260kg trailer (inc horse) with a car that can tow 1400kg max (example a golf?) the trailer weighs nearly as much as car as its kerb weight (the weight of the vehicle - http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/volkswagen.htm) - a golf tdi CAN tow 1400kg BUT it only weighs 1226kg itself and so your trailer would be more can the car - imagine going downhill! or on a motorway. may be legal but not safe.
