Hello,

I am thinking of getting an every day car but also to use a couple of times a month for towing to take my 14.2hh pony to a few local competitions. (within 30 miles) My partner normally tows with his Defender when we take both the horses however I would like to be able to take the pressure off him a little and me to take my pony out on my own sometimes. I really like the freelander and am wondering if anyone has any experience of towing just one pony/small horse with it?

A freelander can tow and I have towed with one. What you need to take into account is the weight of trailer you are towing as well as your horse.

Freelanders 2's are better than the older ones for towing. They still aren't ideal but if you have a lightweight trailer and you are just travelling one pony then it should be fine.

I towed with mine, a single trailer with a pony in it (14hh NF) and didn't like it. Prefered my old Hilux, the Freelander drank fuel & didn't have many 'guts' whereas the older Hilux was a lot better.

Both cars did die after towing (Hilux head gasket went & Freelanders prop shaft went) so would only tow with something a lot bigger now :)

The new Freelanders are considerably larger than the original ones (and the first engines were rubbish and could hardly tow the vehicle along, let alone a trailer as well).

You really need to know which model and which engine it has. People do tow with Freelanders and you won't be towing a huge weight, so when you see one for sale, just check up all the details.

We had one for years and towed over hill and dale and out of swamplike showparking as well  was a great everyday car as well.

I now have an Xtrail that I can't fault in all honesty, had it 5years now and its done the job everytime. I tow a 16.2 TB and a 14.2 welshx with it in a 5+5 hunter and it tows great. Cheaper on fuel than the freelander as well.

I have a Freelander that I use to tow a single horse trailer with my 16.1 ID x TB inside. I love it. Never had an issue towing with it and have been here, there and everywhere. Not sure how it would fare with a heavier trailer though.

Hi, I have a freelander 2 and a Ifor Wialliams 510 I live in Cornwall and it goes up and down hills just fine I don't go over the weight limit and have had no problems at all. Also its a nice car to drive around when not towing, not as wide as some 4x4 so you can park it in Tescos

I have a freelander 2 as my car, love it, handles really well and got me home through some very big drifts, icy roads and deep snow recently. So comfy as well on a long drive. The control system for extra drive is easy to use.

Ours is the Eco models so costs less on road tax, and not bad on fuel.

Have not yet towed ponies with it, but can not see it being a problem as has a bigger engine than we have towed with in past.
