I wasn't sure where to put this but hope someone will have some views.

We have an Ifor Williams 510 and two horses whose joint weights are 1300KG having put them on a weigh bridge. We tow with a Discovery TD5.

We go to a lot of shows and want to buy a motor home and use it to tow our trailer but we are having trouble finding anything up to the job.

Does anyone here ever tow with a motor home and how do you manage? Do you have to be careful before you go onto the showground and do a reccy first?

Are we chasing a dream that can't be fulfilled with a motorhome?

Any opinions are welcome.

We converted a minibus into a motorhome, with the idea that I can use it for Trec events. We usually tow with an L200 that has a towing capacity of 2700 kg, but the 'bus only has a limit of 2000....so what with the weight of the trailer at 1400 kg (H10) we are on the limit with only one horse!

My husband used to tow a car and trailer (about 1900kg) with a Winnebego, lovely spec but left hand drive. A lot of the other motorhomes we looked at weren't up to the job.

He said that a Mercedes base or a transit base might be suitable.

Thanks for the replies. We live in France so LHD is no problem!

Rog, The one we are looking at is plated 3,400kg, Alco Chassis, with a Fiat 2.8 JTD engine.

Find the plate on the vehicle - it will have 4 weights - we need the top two figures

The top figure will be the GVW and the second will be the GTW

Take GVW from GTW and that usually gives the max towing capacity - double check with handbook as some towing capacities can be lower or higher

Towing capacity refers to the max actual weight that can be towed and not the max MAM that can be towed

Find empty weight of trailer then add the weight which will be in it and if that is not more than towing capacity all should be fine providing the trailer MAM also allows for that weight

Thanks for the info Rog. I think we may have to forget it because to buy something with the capacity for the horses and trailer we will need to spend a shed load of money.

Back to plan B :-(

there are transit vans/motorhomes with GVW 3500 and GTW 5500 = 2000 towing capacity

With 1300 for the horses that only leaves 700 max for the trailer to weigh when empty and that is going to be hard to find but I think there are one or two that fit the bill
