Towing with a Skoda Yeti Outdoor

We're considering buying a Skoda Yeti Outdoor 2.0 litre as dual purpose vehicle - day to day motoring and occasional towing. Does anyone have any experience of towing with one of these cars? In theory it should be ok but would really like to know if it will be up to the job in practice. I'll only be towing my Bateson Derby with 500kg of cob on board. TIA
 
We have a two litre 4WD diesel Yeti and I would not want tow a horse trailer with a horse on board with it, it's too light itself to happily pull that weight, for me.

Day to day it's a fantastic vehicle and we love it.

Looking at towing around 1200 actual weight and as the car is over that empty I see no issues with the tail wagging the dog
 
Oh thanks for your reply ROG. Model is a 2.0 TDI CR (150) SE 5dr DSG. There are so many models! I have full licence by the way - passed in 1970.

Just seen your reply YCBM - that is the sort of issue I was wondering about. I have towed with a LR Defender for years but we want to sell it and our VW car and just have one dual purpose vehicle.

I know it should work ROG, but I've towed with a Land Rover Series 1 and 2 and I would not be happy to tow with this Yeti on any regular basis. It drives far too much like an ordinary saloon. I love it though. This is just a gut feel, I've never done it.
 
I tow my Ifor Williams with one little Arab, she's a maximum of 450kg, with one. It has done a fantastic job and you can barely feel the trailer on the back. I live near Swansea and have to do big hills to go anywhere. The yeti deals with them admirably, needing to change up to 5th and 6th gear, sometimes. Ours is the 170bhp model though. Obviously, it limits me just taking one horse out, but I do a 50 mile round trip commute to work and this vehicle has been a great compromise.

I know you have B+E but for any B only licence holders reading .......
Assuming the Yeti 4X4 has the highest GVW of 2150 and the Bateson Derby trailer has been down plated by the Bateson manufacturer for about a tenner from the original 1700 to 1350 leaving a trailer payload of 675 then that is a great set up for B towing with an average weight horse

It's good to know that if I have to lose my lorry, I can get a tow bar put on the Yeti. Thanks ROG.
 
We seriously considered getting a 4x4 Yeti, they are fab cars. You see them everywhere out in the sticks, they are proper workhorses. Alas, they are a bit cramped in the back for our needs as the main family car, as we need on occasion to be able to transport 2 x 6ft+ lads in the rear.

We went for the Octavia Scout 4x4 150bhp manual instead, which will tow 2000kg. It has a bigger footprint than the Yeti, but is lower and squatter, and is a brilliantly capable and stable tow vehicle. It returns high 40's mpg in everyday driving. Highly recommended, and it is a very good drive.
 
Thanks for replies. Its good to hear your positive experience gryff, that's what I was looking for. We don't need a big family car so although your Octavia Scout sounds great Tiddlypom its probably not for us. The Yeti does seem popular though - the one we were eyeing up has already been reserved by someone else!

I can't recommend ours highly enough Pen, it's a great car. We carry five in it with no problem at all.
 
Just make sure you don't get a yeti that needs the fuel fix due to the emissions scandal! I love my yeti (not a 4x4) but had the fix done 3 weeks ago and have been towed to garage twice since eventually resulting in new egr valve. Mine is 2011 plate I think 2013 onwards are OK. All said I would have another yeti in a heartbeat!
 
Yetis certainly get a good press on this forum. Thanks for the heads up re the fuel fix meesha. Having more thoughts now re the wisdom of having a diesel engine when we don't really do long journeys that often. Modern diesel engines are so much more complicated than our old LR Defender which doesn't have a particulate filter to block up and then cost a fortune to replace. Now looking at the Skoda petrol models and downplating the trailer as ROG suggested.

Makes no difference legally ....

Examples using same trailer with MAM of 1700 and 675 empty

Vehicle has 2000 tow capacity so 1025 can be loaded into trailer = restricted by 1700 MAM

Vehicle has 1500 tow capacity so 825 can be loaded into trailer = restricted by 1500 tow capacity
 
Oh thanks for that info ROG. I knew there was a reason that I considered towing rules and regulations confusing!- just when I think I've got a handle on it I realise I haven't.
