Hi

Does any one on here tow with a van? My boyfriend is a plumber so will be getting a van later this year and I am hoping to seize the opportunity to get a trailer so that I can get out and about.

Are there any makes/models that we should go for or avoid? It is likely to be an older model rather than a new one and the horse is a 14.2hh cob weighing approx 500kg.

Thanks

You cannot assume that the van will be able to tow your trailer. You need to check A. if the van has the capability to tow your horse and trailer and B. if its not his van, does his boss mind ?

Thanks. I don't care what we look like as long as it is safe and legal.

It will be his own van and obviously I will only consider something that will be able to tow my horse and a trailer. Just wanted to know if it is a viable option

Friend tows her equitrack - but with only one 14.2 cob with her OH's transit - one horse is fine but not two with the equitrack.

Am seriously considering one as my next vehicle - great for picking up horse feed etc and will happily tow my small trailer. I can then sleep in it at show by putting in an air matress (like my friend does).

Transits tow well - but do check out the model you get to make sure it has the right sized engine etc.

just a thought if it will be insured for his work use you will have to let the insurance company know that you will be towing with it. i use a works nissan aventura double cab for towing and it is under our fleet cover for business use only so they were fine just made a record of it and the trailer is not insured when towing it under the fleet cover.

and yes do tow the equitrek with my OH's transit van.

Check your weights as they don't all tow the same amount, but mine will legally and safely tow my Equitrek with one horse on board. It is easy to drive and fantastic as I have virtually NO transport costs

Back of the transit is also great for transporting hay, bedding etc if staying overnight, and for sleeping in as has been done on many an occasion!

Thanks for your responses. Looks like a transit would be the best option then. I will look into weights and insurance.

Thanks
