Hi!

After some first hand experiences of a VW Touareg for towing? I've found one locally I can go & see this week 2012 model with a max braked towing weight of 3500kg, do they tow as well as the spec's suggest & how are they for reliability? Seem pretty decent on fuel too for what they are - it would be my full time car & I have a 60 mile round commute.

I tow an Ifor HB506 with a 500kg cob & sometimes a friends horse too - reason for wanting so much power is the very steep hills in the area I live where my Sorento struggles a little despite 2800kg capacity. I've had my towing licence for the last 7 years so all ok there.

Thanks!

Hi,
Your Touareg should happily pull a 2 horse trailer plus all tack. My daughter's BF has a 2007 which is still going strong and is very reliable. She lives in the Highlands and it can battle almost any hill and rough old track! It also has a lot of power so you can give it some wellie!:)
Her nearest Tesco is 85 miles away.

Hiya, we tow a HB506 with a 2009 Touareg (or rather OH does!), with either a 16hh 585kg ID, 15.3 520kg WB or both. OH really likes the Touareg- he says it tows very well and it never struggles towing the two up steep hills. The fuel economy is not great but ours is an older model than the one you’d be looking at. It’s his day to day car, he reckons the fuel economy is comparable with other similar sized vehicles, but he feels the compromise is worth it for the towing capacity.

I had one for years it was the best tow car I’ve ever owned and I’ve had a wide range (shogun , full fat rangey, defender , xc90, frontera, landcrusier) over the years ... it didn’t even feel like it had a trailer behind it when towing a 511 and 2 horses - (hw cob and a 17.2 Dutch warm blood)

That's great news thank you all! Its a tough call to make as I went about looking at 3.5 tonne lorries but I don't do enough to have one sitting there plus I couldn't take a friend with the low payload, so it's a matter of finding a good strong tow vehicle with decent mpg that wont completely bankrupt my running it to work daily  Looking forward to seeing it Thursday now! :D

I've towed with a Touareg for the past four years and found it easily tows two horses. It's a 61 plate. It tows better than the old BMW X5 that we used to own. Husband uses it for his daily commute to work too!

I used to tow with a Tiguan which really wasn’t up to the job. A friend with a Touareg told me towing with a Touareg you would forget you were towing. Which I thought with rubbish! But changed to Touareg and she is right, I tend not to forget I have a pony behind me but towing empty or towing a trailer loaded with fencing yes you do forget you are towing it is that good!

I have been towing with a Touareg for just under 2 years (13 plate V6 3 litre) and it is fantastic for towing, tows just as well if not better than the Landrover Discovery that it replaced and is much much more reliable! Like the Discovery it is quite thirsty but it's a powerful vehicle (be careful when not towing as it is quite fast!!!).

All sounds great! Seems to fit exactly what I'm looking for & will be nice not having to worry about power. The only downside is that its 'java brown' which isn't my favourite colour, but as my OH points out, it'll be that colour most of the time anyway & disguise the mud! lol!!!
