Hi - sorry to ask again about the legal towing capacity of the jeep cherokee as I have asked this before although I didn't have a trailer then.... we were talking about my Jeep at the yard and wondering whether it is legal to tow two horses with the trailer I have as there are lots of jeeps but some newer ones cannot tow as much.

It is a march 2003 Limited edition CRD A

Revenue Weight is 2031 (whatever that is???)

Engine - 2776CC

Trailer - unladen weight is 1400 (ifor williams black 505 classic)

How do you work out the maximum towing capacity??

Does this mean I can tow two horses (currently practicing towing with someone till I do the test again - but want to go out with someone and their horse, ie so both of us can ride )

Have a look at UK tow, that wil give you the maximum tow weight and then as a rule of thumb, you should not look to go above 85% of that. That is the caravan clubs recommended limit and while it is not a legal requirement it might be argued that you are driving with out due care if you ignored those limits.

Are you sure your Ifor is really 1400kgs as that seems really high. My Bateson which will carry 2 x17 hands comes in under 1000.

My Jeep is the 3.7 ltd, so max towing capacitor 3.3 so I presume my upper limit is 2.8. My horse is around 600 kg so even with a companion and fully laden I am well within my limits.

I had a jeep cherokee 2.5 crd and provided it had the solid tow bar fitted it could tow 2 horses easily. when you look it up there are 2 lots of weights for that model and the lower tow weight is for the towbar that is demountable.

I tow an Ifor Williams 510 with a Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD the towing capacity is 3500ks, which if you allow 1000kgs for the trailer gives you ample capacity for a couple of horses. Mind you I only tow with one horse on board. To be honest it's as if there was nothing behind you. Great on hills and across rough terrain. Mind you its fuel consumption is nothing to write home about - when not towing I average 28 mpg (but I do have a heavy right foot :) ) and when towing average about 23 - 25 mpg - that's with the trailer and a 650kg horse.

Reason i get confused is that I found a jeep that according to the towing trailers website could only tow 2000 and that threw me although I think it was a different model.year. Someone at the yard said they didn't get a cherokee because it coudlnt pull two and that you needed to get a grand cherokee. So that completely threw me!

Ps there is nothing in my manual or car details that says car towing capacity - i only have that revenue weight of 2031 and have no idea what that means, and the engine size 2776. Oh - and it's an automatic!!

PS my towbar is pretty solid!

The Jeep wrangler according to a trailer towing website can only tow 2000Kg - yet the engine is 2.8 so i don't understand that?

Yep - I think 3500 - I was questioned on it at yard whether the jeep could tow two in an ifor 505 with total weight unladen at 1400 plus horses would be 2400 - I think because on towing horse trades website it said jeep 2.8 ltr has only 2000 towing capacity but I think the site refers to jeep wrangler which is a different model but same engine size
