Towing with Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Has anyone done this? My OH is considering one for his company car snd it says it can tow 1500 kg. We were thinking of getting s lightweight trailer, either a Bateson derby or a ifor single trailer to take my 500kg mare.

Does this sound feasible? Does it tow well? I don't know why the hybrids can't tow as much I believe it's due to transmission issues or braking issues.

Nearly made it on a B licence for a 500 horse but not quite ........

Bateson Derby trailer = 675 empty - can be down plated to 1160 leaving 485 for max trailer load
 
I tow with a Kia Sportage which tows up to 2000kg, it's mostly fine, but personally I'd never go to anything that tows less than that. I tow a single 401 which is 960kg unladen and my cob mare who's probably about 500kg. I'd never go any heavier than that, I really notice the weight behind me, and that's with being over 500kg under the towing weight with a horse who travels quietly.

People ...... in a trailer !!

The towing limit refers only to what is being towed behind the vehicle - what goes in the vehicle is different

Separate weight limits for the vehicle (GVW) and the trailer (MAM)
 
Yes everything bar the pony (14.2) and a haynet would go into the car.

So 675 + 500 = 1175, so way below the 1500kg weight. This seems ok to me maths wise. Even with a 10kg (enoirmous) hay net it would be under 1200 kg.

Rog am I right in thinking that it won't need downplating as I'm not trying to tow on a B licence?

Correct - no down plate needed using B+E
 
Thank you Rog.

This combination enables us to use my oh's company car to tow, keeps the tax and fuel costs down as it's electric and keeps us happy with green credentials of the car.

I'd love to tow or have a small lorry but driving around in a gas guzzler just seems wrong now. I'd like to do my bit. Saving money is good too.

If we don't end up with this car then for the amount I need to travel at the moment it's cheaper for me to hire a 3.5 ton lorry.
