Towing with out trailer plate?

When I bought my trailer I had an Xtrail so had to get it down rated to 2000kg to legally tow with it.

When I bought the shogun I never bothered to change it as it was only ever one horse I was towing anyway.

A new girl moved to the yard and we seem to want to go to a lot of the same shows and the plan was we'd go in her 7.5 tonne lorry but she missed the plating last week and is now waiting for a new appointment which means for this weekend's outing I'll be taking them in the trailer.

Only problem is, with the current plate we may be slightly overweight (905kg for the trailer, about 550kg for my horse and about 600kg for the other horse) - although not outwith the cars limits by any means!

The distributor I bought it from has asked me to send them the plate and they will get me a new one from Ifor Williams but this could take a couple of weeks.

Is there any legislation around towing without a plate? Not sure which is better - no plate or plate for lower weight?

I drove without one for a few weeks when it was getting downgraded but it was all very local whereas we are going a wee bit further afield this time!

Chances of getting stopped are very slim - I've never been stopped and we're not passing a weight bridge (at least I don't think so)

Anyone have any knowledge of this?

Yes you could get done for overloading if you were stopped and weighed, however there is no legal reason to downplate a light trailer(under 3500kg) apart from if you dont have trailer intitlement on your licence ... then the whole lot has to be less than 3500kg car and trailer , yes you could take the plate off but then if you got stopped the police may question if the trailer is stolen and that might be a pain !!!

We changed the plated weight on our trailer after a conversation with the trailer technical man at VOSA (Kevin Guest) for the same reason as you. I got a local metal worker to engrave the back of the original plate and pop rivet it back on. Cost £20. time about 40min. If I have problems with the police in the future, or I want to return it to the original weight all i have to do is turn the plate back. If you want the Ifor plate you'll have to wait, if not you could get it done locally.

Thanks - I have all the purchase documentation/owners log etc in the glove box so no problem there!

My friend is going to remove it for me tonight and I'll send it back to IW.

digger66 - thanks for that suggestion - would probably be just as easy for me to send it back to IW than find a metal worker - wouldnt know where to start looking for one :D
