I asked when I first joined but worth another go!

Does anyone know the history on Monty. 16.3hh (ish) dark bay tb gelding. Passport says 19 years old but the vet thinks he is around 30.

I got him from a lady called Jo in Norfolk who had got him free to loving home around 2003/2004. Before that he had been in Essex and, before that, Kent. He is an ex-eventer. He has two patches of lighter fur on his back heels.

He is HORRIBLE to load and kicks out when fed. Any info on his past much appreciated!!

Looking at his pictures, I'd be very doubtful he is 30. TBs tend to get very lean and just look old, even when they are in their late teens. Why not have a good horsey dentist give you a second opinion?

The dentist thinks he is even older! He was actually the one who said he was in his 30s and I actually got vet out for second opinion. He looks like a toast rack in winter and I spend ALOT of money keeping him looking well. This is him 4 weeks ago

does he crib bite? my dentist thought my cob was 25plus when she looked at his teeth- then i told her he used to crib bite...apparently that explains it! so he's back to being 18 again

Do you know his eventing name? (If he has a wetherbys passport it will be the same as the name in that) Maybe you could find out more about him through british eventing. He looks good for an old boy 19 or 30!

I too would be very surprised if that horse was near 30. I have had some terrible ages estimated by vets - including one who was 18, yet aged as a 10 year old during his vetting (yes, quite!). I would get a dentist's opinion - there are various things that can alter perception of age, crib biting as someone suggested, misalignment of the teeth, over rasping etc.

The dentist thinks he is over 30. He has teeth missing at the front so thought he could be a crib biter. However, the dentist says that it is simple wear and tear at the front. His back teeth are very good. He seems much more like an old horse in the flesh since he is very creaky and gets tired easily. The dentist is out again in three weeks. Maybe I should take some photos of his teeth. Are there any EDTs on HHO who might take a look?

He looks cracking and what a lucky boy to have found you. I would start with his passport & perhaps contact vets that did vaccinations a few years ago they would be able to pass your number onto clients
