Hello, has anyone ever had any luck tracing an irish horse's breeding? I bought a horse last year that is white passported so has nothing recorded and I am keen to find out what he is made up of! If anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I have looked on Horse Sport Ireland but couldn't find anything other than what I already know. Thanks in advance.

Give them a ring and ask about DNA sampling. My guy's DNA is registered with them so I assume they've got a database.

They can only verify breeding with DNA you need to know what parents to check against. You cannot send a sample and they tell you who the parents are if only it was that easy! lol

Unless you have some idea of his breeding I dont think the DNA database is set up to search through looking for a match, it is worth a call in case he was registered at birth and has had a replacement passport for some reason, otherwise you need to track back to where he was passported and see if they can help you track back to his breeders.

I thought white passports were for horses that hadnt been DNA tested.

White passports are for horses with no known breeding so the call will be wasted, they have nothing to tell you and know as much as you do about its parentage if its not on the passport.

Start by contacting the person who had the horse passported, it will be noted even on a white passport. They might be able to point you in the direction of the previous owner before them whom they bought from, and so on and so on. I managed to trace my 14 year old Irish horse right back to its original breeder. Good luck but I don't think you will be able to go too far back if it has been through a few sales.

Chip matches definitely as was checked when I had him vetted. I suspected it may not be so easy! I will write to the person who passported him and see where we go from there :) thank you all

do have a name of the person who the passport was issued to? as you might be able to search them through the horse board site / EI / SJI etc. Or someone on here from Ireland might know them! Its a small country!

I had two irish boys. Wrote to both prev owners in ireland. One phoned me as soon as he got my letter - but think he was more interested in selling me another!. Other never came back which is a shame as would love to hear about his past.

Or look up the breeder and either try and call directly or ask for info on FB on one of the Irish breeder association. My friend tracked hers back and then his entire history. The last vendor was very surprised to hear that his talents but woefully quirky horse is now a 1* horse and looking to go 2* this year! Had some wonderful stories (and the breeding...well, let's just say it was not what we had guessed!)

I've actually had some luck- I messaged some irish dealers on Facebook to ask for thei advice and one immediately noticed a resemblance with the stallion Cavalier Two for Joy- I've looked into this and makes so much sense! He has two white eyes which has been commented on by a few as to how rare it is and the Dam of the stallion was an Appaloosa. I've contacted the stud and there is only really one mare from his part of Ireland that it could be so I've spoken to Horse Sport Ireland about a DNA Test and am waiting for the kit to arrive. Thank you all, very exciting!
