Ok so I’ve got a bit of a mystery going on with a little horse I own, and am hoping someone can shed some light for me?? we bought from a UK dealer, who has been absolutely no bloomin help whatsoever, who apparently shipped him over from Ireland 3 years ago, but he came without a passport? vet has scanned him, and can only find one chip, so that’s a start. She says it’s not a UK chip, so there’s my next clue, however, the number doesn’t appear to be from any known country of origin! The first 6 digits are 250259. He does now obviously have a UK passport, but I would dearly love to try and trace his original one. Any clues anyone as to where these numbers originate from, as apparently each country has their own unique code number which is the first 3 digits of the long chip number. Tia

It would appear your horses chip originates in France. 250 is their unique ISO code. UK starts 826 and Germany 441
Wow? thank you for that, and that’s interesting considering he was sold to us as an Irish Sport Horse! Any idea if it’s possible to trace his origins? I’m now starting to wonder about his age and if it’s accurate!?

You might be able to but my experience with my horses German chip didn’t reveal anything. His chip was put in at his foal grading and at the same time he was registered as a Westphalian pony. His breeder however did nothing with the chip so when I bought him although I knew his full history because of his breeding certificate and passport his chip threw up nothing but the number. When it became law here to have all horses chipped and registered I ended up having to register him with the Equine section of the Kennel Club who re register European horses. If I had had to rely on just the chip I wouldn’t know anything about him but you never know what Sunnyone may find out so it’s worth a try.
