Traditional v modern - saddles opinions please!

Just wondered what people think about saddle technology?
After hearing about Mary Lofthouse Wow saddle breaking while on cross country at Blenheim and her subsequent withdrawal, I am wondering if the more modern saddles are reliable or is it best to stick to the traditional ways?
Opinions please?

My horse with kissing spines has just had his saddle altered by Kay Humphries, who has fitted it with a serge lining and half panel - so grandpa had it right all those years ago!

Oh do you know the details of what broke on the wow saddle?

Well I've got a very old saddle (about 15 yrs old I think) and it's really comfy and seems to fit all the horses!

I'd much rather have a nice new one, but think I would stick to more of a traditional style - I think the newbies are more of a marketing campaign than anything else.

I like some new ones, but they all seem to put so much between rider and horse. Give me an old one any day - the flatter the better and no knee rolls!

I believe it was the headplate fractured and collapsed onto horses back. Have heard of others having similar problems...
