I posted this in Breeding the other day but since then it has come to light the number of british bred trakehners who have perished. Please read the news articles below for further info:

I have asked Susan (owner of the Holme Trakehner stud) if i can post this on here to raise awareness and possible funds to help feed the surviving horses over there.

Anyone wishing to help feed the surviving horses can send their donations via the CACMA website at www.cacma.org" CACMA APPEAL POSTER

Positive Vibes much needed to help these poor animals!

I see they've publicly released who has died. Just makes it so much more real when you knew the horses. The pic of Holly is haunting me a little

Poor Galaxy aswell, such a sweet sweet mare - well they all were. Doesn't surprise me that good old Serene is still alive, little but what a strong mare!

Thoughts with Susan A and Marleen.

RIP Suconlavita, what a waste of a life

I felt sick looking at those pictures

Atrocious! From the Daily Mail story she is denying the claims. If she is found to be guilty I don't know what punishment would be suitable enough.

Disgusting, there is no excuse for allowing this to happen. She should be in prison and banned for having animals for life at least.

I know, i have had tears in my eyes, especially when i saw the chesnut lying there dead, as her face reminds me so so much of my filly. Thats the horrible thing though, when you begin to imagine what the poor things must have endured and how long it must have taken for there suffering to finally end. Im just lost for words with it all....

I do not understand why the survivers are going to be pts, surely they can be saved?

Its an outrage.

ILPH and RSPCA are being involved, its hoped that the horses will find 'life' foster homes where they can never be bred from or sold on again.

I feel for poor Suconlavita(D), Berbero(D) and Dinamica (pictured in a sling) as they went through this once already before the Singing Stud saved them from Italy!

I know, i would imagine it takes a long time to starve a horse before it gets that weak that it actually dies of starvation. I think they're ridiculous excuses to be honest and quite frankly she shouldn't be allowed to own a hamster let alone a number of horses. Why anyone would want to own 50 odd horses and not have the resources to keep them is beyond me. I just hope that justice is done where this woman is concerned and that she suffers as much as these poor beautiful horses have done.

Just read on the Fugly site of a judge in America sentencing a bloke guilty of starving his animal to a cup of water and some bread, dont know for how long but it was to let him experience what hunger felt like
cool.gif
. I doubt if much will happen to her but IMO things shouldnt have gotten this far.Did no one see these horses before it was too late? Mairi.

i've heard of a similar thing too. some guy nearly starved his poor dog to death, so he was sentenced to jail with only bread and water.
still too good for some people tho

So those 3 horses have been rescued from a similar situation in Italy?

Thats terrible bad enough to happen once in a horse's life, let alone twice.

I hope they can be saved and have good caring loving homes for life.

Yes, they were bred at a large trakehner stud in Italy, the stud owner ran off with the secretary (or so the story goes) and the wife left the horses to starve, The Singing Trakehner and Bluewood stud saved them, I bought one of them, he's in Essex now thankfully as he'd have probably been amongst those in Spain. Flew 1m60 loose so you can imagine the wasted talent and lives of those in Italy

The Holme Trakehners site now has a list of the dead. I personally knew quite a few of these horses and it is a tragedy. Sulika was a stunning foal - I remember playng with her and HT considered her one of the best foals they had ever bred. RIP poor trakehners.

absolutely horrific. Is the dead chestnut Singing Holly? - the markings look the same as the picture gallery on www.thesingingstud.co.uk. How terrible..

I've just emailed my OH's parents who live with their own horses in Andalucia and know many other horsey expats. They also used to own a stud in Gloucestershire, know of Marleen before she started breeding trakehners, and may be able to help.

How terrible for Marleen.

Well this is what my OH's pa has to say from Spain. Doesn't add anything more than the reports unfortunately:

Wednesday 20th August, 2008

According to the local press reports here, the horses
are being well looked after at the moment. The problem is
that, under the Rgional Law, all horses and dogs resuced
from such situations have to be destroyed! Don't ask me
why?

A local organisation, composed of both British and
local Spanish, is fighting to get an exception made in
this case. So far I don't know with what success.

The problem here with the Law, and in fact everything
pertaining to it, is that it is very rigid and in some
cases draconian: and for this reason is widely ignored at
all levels, both oficial and private. The problems seem to
arise when the law is invoked, it grinds on in a
completely inflexible manner. Unless, of course, some
individual of standing intervenes to, 'short circuit
things'"

All things legal and official are very much open to
personal influence by individuals who have the necessary
contacts, or necessary depth of pocket!

This particular business happened quite a long way
from us and I don't have any personal knowledge of the
person involved. I will contact the local English Language
press to see if they can tell me anything more; and then
report back.
