I did post several months ago as to ranch recommendations in Texas and got several helpful replies. Just to let you know that we've been and gone and done it! Very nice it was too. We ended up at the wonderfully tranquil Bar M ranch near Bandera, a tiny town with a true Wild West feel.
Bar M is a working ranch with trail riding as a side line run by a lovely lady called Trisha who oversees one cabin for accommodation, eleven horses and accompanies the rides. OH and I had a glorious three days meandering out on our horses along miles of winding trails, through crystal clear creeks and shady cedar forestry, just us and Trisha. It was so relaxing and a great intro to Western riding.
We then went on to stay with my brother and family in Houston, a totally different experience of course to Bandera, and again, had a brill few days. As luck would have it we'd timed it perfectly for the rodeo championships so had a fantastic time watching rodeo, bull riding, chuck wagon, barrel racing, etc, oh and the absolute highlight, Mutton Bustin', which turned out to be children of 6 and 7 years old riding sheep which were released from gates just as the rodeo horses and bulls had been. The winner received a huge medal for sticking on his sheep for all of 5 seconds. Can't believe such an event would be allowed in the UK with health and safety and all that. Had to be seen to be believed!
