I quite fancy doing a bit of in hand showing this year as he really needs to get used to going out to more places, but tries to kill me if I ride him at shows

I want to have a go at trailblazers in-hand showing for the large M&M's, but would we do any good? Is it even worth it? Is it very competitive?

They get marked on style, conformation and performance.

Style and performance I think he may be okay, he fancies himself anyway so has no problem in doing a nice posh trot...

(he isnt that fat, its his winter coat...I think

I have no idea on conformation though, so please critique!

Would he look better with mane pulled slightly shorter (NF's are allowed to have mane pulled)
wheres jm07 when we need her

Grow that tail a bit! It looks nice and long in the summer pics

He looks Gorg. in the winter pic!

no idea about showing though but if you can get that presence from the first pic im sure he will turn some heads.

He definitely needs pulling and trimming up to a point - check the NF breed society website to see how much you can get away with. Some breeds are allowed more extensive trimming than others.

As far as CC goes I don't really know the breed standard for NFs so you could check the breed webby for that too. I would say his body looks a bit 'tubey' (showing people will be familiar with this phrase!!) but we have an NF x at home and he is that shape no matter how much weight he carries so maybe that is characterisitic of the breed.

Your main problem is going to be the judges!! I assume it will be mixed M&M and many judges just don't recognise NFs, I am talking at County level here. There is reason that this year's NF Olympia winner was the first ever of the breed to achieve this

. When a mixed M&M class goes in the ring the breed of the pony is meant to shout itself out, all the ponies are meant to be 'typey' and many judges will look at a New Forest and think 'what's that?'. You also find a bit of 'fashion' in mixed M &M and the current trend seems to be Connies!

I speak from experience as a friend of my mum's judges at top level (HOYS this year though not M&Ms) told me, when I was considering buying a show quality NF 'don't buy one of those, nobody knows what they are!!' - sad but true.

I say take him anyway and have fun. Is he a youngster? He might grow out of his naughtiness at shows, our NF X is the best allround competition pony we have ever had.

Go for it, good luck and hope you get a good judge!

Holly_P - haha, my friend is to blame

minesadouble - thanks for your long reply

Yes, its mixed M&M, connie (

) fell, dales, higland and newfie. I totally see where you are coming from, as they seem to lack some sort of presence when compared to the other large M&M breeds.

Yes, he is only 5, so hopefully he will grow out of it, im fed up of getting bronked off at every show I go to

Thankyou

I'm affraid its a bit true about NF - I have a book on showing natives so I can scan you in the info on showing NF if you PM me your email address.

Mane is plaited over onto the wrong side though

I think your pony is beautiful he defo has the wow factor, I am looking to take my youngsters to the trailblazers showing in April, they are cross breeds but Im just going for the experience and to get them out.

Cronkmooar does the mane have to be plaited on the right side? What happens when the mane naturally grows to the left like this pony?

He looks quiye long through his back and front-heavy, but he's got loads of presence so will probably do well at local stuff regardless.

Ooo yes please, will just PM you now

His mane has always been that side, ive tried to make it go the other side but it doesnt work

The mane is always plaited onto the off side - if it grows on the wrong side you plait it over onto the correct side to train it. It doesn't take long for it to sit on the correct side

I did this last year with Stinky and have qualified first round and going to do the second round later in the year once I am back on my feet.

Get someone who knows NF to take you through the t/o - he does need some careful tidying up but NFs can take the top prize - just look at Olympia this year.

Competition - at the finals it really does vary from people with one horse that do mainly local stuff, so those who go to county shows but everyone is supposed to be an amateur competitior.

It is not cheap but Stoneleigh was impressive and great experience for Stinky and I did very much enjoy going.

This year, all being well I will be doing hairy coloureds ridden, inhand and the working cob class.
