From that pic, it looks like the horses are still in the trailer when it was taken, as the story says they cut a hole in the roof to get them out. Must have been terrifying

I wonder how the trailer ended up falling that way too.

Poor horsey

[/ QUOTE ] I would think the coupling has separated during the inital impact allowing the trailer to overturn because of the load shifting or it going backwards and digging in...

Animals rescued after horsebox overturns
EMERGENCY services and veterinary experts battled to free two horses trapped after the trailer they were in overturned on the A14.

The dramatic scenes unfolded after the horsebox overturned on the westbound carriageway between Milton and Histon at about 12.40pm on Saturday.

Three vets from the Cambridge Equine Clinic along with a team of firefighters from Cambridge's Parkside fire station worked to release the pair who are now described as "doing well".

The rescue took about an hour, with the veterinary team sedating the horses before firefighters cut them out of the wreckage of the trailer.

Tessa Frost, one of the motorists who stopped to help, and who is a keen rider herself, said:

"The fire brigade and vets were brilliant. I am full of praise for them.

They handled it brilliantly and deserve to be thanked and recognised."

The road was closed for more than two hours. The delay had a knock-on effect on traffic in Cambridge as drivers tried to bypass the A14.

I would imagine the red Mondeo drove onto the roundabout quite fast intending to go in behind the Merc van and didn't realise the Merc was towing. You can see it has hit the trailer on the nearside front- if you look at the 3rd picture with it upright you can see a big kink in the towing coupling as well as damage to the front NS of the trailer. I would imagine as the car driver realised the Merc was towing, it then swerved left so it's front nearside went under the the back of the Merc, flipping the Merc and in the impact the coupling came off the van, the horses weight having shifted to the back flipped it upright, and the Merc was flipped by the front nearside of the car going under it's nearside rear.

I feel sorry for the owner and both horses, how very traumatic for all.

oh lord that is horific, their poor horses, just so upsetting even to read.

Hope everyone else concerned makes a full an speedy recovery.

My God, that is simply dreadful. Makes me never want to use my trailer again!!! Poor bloody horses and poor owners. What a horrible experience to have to go through...

Having had an accident with a friends trailer, where thankfully everyone came out unscathed (inc horses and dog) I wouldn't ever want my horse to travel in one.

Why on earth was he pulling with a ford mondeo with two horses anyway :/ they have not got the power or breaking stamina to hold it, would not be suprised if it is something to do with that!! poor horses
