Trailer and plate question

I was with my friend today and she pointed out that the plate on the trailer that gives towing weight etc had gone 'missing'.

Does anyone know if these can be replaced and if so from where??
I have an old secondhand but very useful Sinclair trailer.
Is it true that it is illegal to tow without the plate?

Feeling a bit concerned about this... :confused:

Hmm. Maybe I'm wrong then. Just that when I look into buying older trailers no one seems to know how much they weigh so I assume they didn't have one. I'll be interested to know now! Sorry, not much help to you though.

Has your friend just bought it?

Ours used to have the chassis no. on it as well. So if she's just bought it could it have been stolen?

Have to admid I didn't think you had to have a plate on unless that's a new law. I suppose the manufacturers may be able to supply your friend with another one.

Not many people know where it is. It's like some commercial vehicles they have their gross and unladen weight on but alot of the drivers have no idea where it is or where to look:rolleyes:

The trailer is mine, she was with me at the time and we were near my trailer.
Complicated sorry!

I hadnt noticed it was there to start with but she had and that it had gone.
Maybe it doesnt matter then, hopefully....
 
I bought a Cheval Liberte new about 3 years ago and the plate on it actually identifies that trailer. I don't mean to sound suspicious but there is always the chance that the plate has been taken to replace one on a stolen trialer to sell it on!
 
There seems to be some disagreement on the web about whether you legally have to display the weight, some seem to quote VOSA saying theres no legal requirement to display unladen weight for a private trailer, some say 1982 regs say you have to.

Question is, do you know what was on the plate weight wise? if so google as there are companies that will make you up a plate for it.

If not then contact Sinclair if they still exist to find towing capacity, and take the trailer to a public weighbridge (there will be one in your area) to establish the actual weight of the trailer. They will give you a printout, which I would keep with you when towing, as well as having the plate made up.

I agree its quite possible the old plate is either lost or has been nicked to provide legitimacy for some toerags nicked trailer. Tho that would be more likely for an Ifor than a Sinclair.
