Finally decided that now I'm planning to go a bit father afield with my boy in his trailer I really should get some proper horse breakdown cover sorted. It looked like it was going to cost me an arm and a leg. The cheapest one I found was ESS but their website made it sound like you had to be a member of the RAC, which I'm not (I'm with a much cheaper claim-back company called Auto Aid). So on the off chance I gave ESS a call to ask if they offered the cover to people who were with other breakdown services, expecting a flat NO and to my surprise they told me they did! So for just £45 I now know that if I breakdown my boy won't be stranded on the side of the road. I think that's a bargain.

I thought exactly the same as you Astra! So thanks very much for this, I'm going to ring and get the same cover now. My friend uses them for her lorry (and she was under the impression you had to be a member of the RAC so joined them) and ESS were great when they broke down in the middle of nowhere with three horses on board.

The lady I spoke to said that you have to have "recovery" breakdown cover for your towing vehicles and trailer with someone else, but that it didn't matter which company that was with. If you break down you have to ring your vehicle breakdown company first, then it if looks like they are going to need to tow you (rather than fixing the problem at the roadside) you call ESS and they will come out and collect the horses.

Glad this post has helped someone.

I can't sing ESS praises enough at the moment, my Pajero broke down a fortnight ago while I was towing, and between the RAC and ESS, Marnie was rescued and taken home by a local transporter and my truck and trailer were taken back to the yard by the RAC. From making the first call to us all being back at home, Marnie in her stable and the trailer and truck parked up was just under 3 hours. They kept me informed all the time, were wonderful when we had to unload on a busy dual carriageway and load into the lorry and just worth every penny!

Pity it cost me over £2000 to have the cylinder head replaced on my truck!!!
