Can anyone tell me where I'm likely to find a stamped/engraved number on my trailer?

I have a very old Bahill trailer and I can't find it anywhere. I believe all vehicles should have a number engraved into them from production and will then be on the system. Looking to down grade the gross weight it can take and I believe Vosa need the number.

Thank you :)

Thank you but unfortunately my trailer doesn't have the silver plate on it, it has came off some where down it's history. I was hoping for maybe something actually branded into the chassis but can't find anything anywhere! It is an 80s trailer if that makes a difference- perhaps it could be on a bizarre place!

Most of the very old trailers had the number stamped into the V on the chassis which ends with the tow hitch.

As most of them have had many coats of paint you need to sand all the paint off to find them.

Of course if it has been stolen at some time in its history, then it will probably have had the number ground off, in which case there is not much you can do.

Thank you, I've signed up to that forum.

Rockysmum- from memory I think all it says on the V is 'Bradley doublelock' meaning the coupling. I know the Bahill logo above the window and the flags at the side have been painted over but if you know what you're looking for you can still see them.

Perhaps I'm being really daft here - it has been known.

If the trailer has a maximum authorised mass not exceeding 3500kg then why are VOSA getting involved with the downplating?

Easy way of determining if MAM exceeds 3500kg; the trailer will have 'power brakes,' in other words 'air brakes.' If the trailer has the usual overrun brakes then VOSA do not (usually) get involved with downplating, that would be an issue to take up with the manufacturers (or their successors).

I didn't explain it very well. I didn't mean as far forward as the hitch but in between the hitch and the body of the trailer, on the thick chassis metal.

I have had three or four different makes of trailer and they all had the number somewhere in that area.
