I mentioned to my boss last week (just in conversation) that I would like to take my trailer test. He turned round and said that would be great, and the company will organise and pay for it!! I have just got conformation of dates - it is all booked up! It's an intensive three day course, with an exam at the end. I alreay drive our trailer around quite a bit anyway, and am pretty good at reversing etc, but any tips/what to expect would be appreciated!

Ooooh how exciting, i have just managed to persuade OH to let me have a 4x4 & trailer, hopefully i will be following in your foot steps too & taking my trailer test, for now will have to rely on Dad ferry Me & Belle around, aint Dad's great

All the best, keep me posted as to how you get on & what it is like

How exciting - the only tips i can think of is practice lining up the car to the trailer (i had a sticker on the rear windscreen to help) as you only get to check once how far you are away to re-hitch but you are allowed to pull the trailer a little to the tow bar.
Also i really took for granted the speed limits - i have been driving for ages and when i did the test i had no idea what the legal speed limits where on some of the industrial roads so have a look around the test centre and familiarise yourself with the roads surrounding. Also i was told when i was driving in a straight line to check my mirrors to ensure the trailer was okay every 10 seconds. Tbh the instructors were fairly lenient they just want you to be confident and not to clip any kerbs.

right thats ok and is this done from a local test center.
here in northern ireland there is a few people but the local instructor was described as a waste of time.
we was offerd by a ex driving test examner to do the training as he is now a instructor and will be adding the trailer tests soon so will prob put the work his way.
i dont think the test will be to bad but i think helen may find it hard

Good luck - I managed to fail mine the other week on my emergency stop! I was so pleased that I had just done the perfect reverse that I did not hit the break hard enough!!

The ridiulous thing is that I passed my HGV FIRST TIME and so am now in the stupid position where I can drive a bloody huge lorry but not a defender and trailer!

LOL FrecklesMum - it makes me laugh that OH has grandfather rights to tow a trailer, and yet when we get to a show, I have to get out and manouvere it/reverse it as he is hopeless! Nine times out of ten I drive it with L plates on anyway!

I'm hoping that the company might also consider HGV training, although at the moment we don't need an HGV - I work in agro-chemical R&D but some of the kit we use is moved about on HGVs and currently we hire them complete with driver. There was talk about getting our own, and I put myself forwards to take the test (no hidden agenda, honest).
