My horse was paralysed and had to be pts last month after I travelled him in a friends trailer which had a rotten patch on the floor that his foot went through, I'm looking to buy another horse in time when I feel better but I am terrified about loading one now :( only solution seems to be never going anywhere but I want to compete.

That's one of my fears. My solution? I only travel in my own trailers which have aluminium planked floors and my lorry has its body and horse area checked by the manufacturer every spring as an entirely separate event from it's VOSA test.

I've seen horses with legs through floors, horses with legs through ramps and seen ramps detach themselves from the lorry or trailer as the horse steps on. I do not wish to take the risk so I'd prefer to own and maintain my own vehicle to make sure I don't have to.

Star, so sorry for what happened to you and your horse. Agree with Jemima Askin, get your own transport and maintain it well.

I had a horse go through the floor of a borrowed trailer. Did't even realise that she had until we got home (was many years ago and my mum was towing). Bless the mare, although she was cut up to her hocks she somehow managed to get her legs back up and stood straddling a large hole. She was fine.

I've seen friends assure others that of course their trailer floor is sound when I know for sure that it is not. So I don't trust anyone except myself these days, lesson learnt.

I agree - travel in your own trailer only or thoroughly inspect the floor of any trailer you are thinking of going in. I get quite angry when people risk their horses in sub-standard vehicles :-(
