I have just been given the go ahead to start shopping for our first trailer, which I will be paying for half with my parents. And need some advise on what to look for, anything to avoid & any tips whilst im looking, oh & the best places to look!
I need something that will take 2x16hh horses (my biggest is only 15.3 so it doesnt need to be huge), but it will mainly be used for getting the youngsters out showing. I'm not bothered about it being flash, but dont want it to look like it will fall apart if you go over a speed bump!! The other criteria is that it must be lightweight, preferably under 1000kg. I was thinking of a cheval liberty or bateson? any experiences of these?
Thank you very muchly!

We had a Bateson Deauville & it was a great trailer. They are well built, tow well, inviting & airy for the horses. They are fairly lightweight, will take up to 17h horses but don't look huge like Ifors etc as the ride height is lower. They have a double saddle rack in the front & there is a choice of door types you can have.

We used ours for 4 years, it never let us down & it retained its value well. We wanted to stay away at shows so we sold it & bought a lorry. I bought the trailer off Horsemart, but there are loads of places you can look for them.

I have just sold my cheval liberte as I am taking a break from competition. It is the best trailer I have owned. I had an Ifor Williams before which was quite heavy and sluggish to pull. The cheval liberte weighs 1000kg unladen and mine took 2 16.2hh horses. They have come down dramatically in price and are only about £3500 new and a lot less second hand. Definitely recommend it.

Have fun looking. I would say that the most important factor is going to be your towing vehicle as this will limit what you can tow. You need to make sure that he towing vehicle can tow the maximum gross weight of the trailer whether it is fully laden or not.

e.g. I have a xtrail (towing capacity 2000kg) but the maximum gross weight of the Ifor505 I have was over this. So I had the trailer replated to 200kg (its a self imposed weight limit). This is fine as I just tow one horse.

Have also looked at Cheval liberty and liked the look of them a lot (but could not find any second hand when I was looking) but would have needed to replate or buy a single or horse and mare trailer to be within the weight also Equitrek are launching a new lightweight trailer.

I have a 2nd Hand Bateson Ascot which looks new, i got a bargain for £1800. Its really light and pulls great with my BMW X3, I have a 16.1hh TB and a 13hh pony. I advertised locally in WANTED columns, and got a couple of phonecalls one being the seller of my trailer. Just make sure it has been serviced and greased every year and preferably an alliminium floor..

Oh we saw a cheval liberte at YHL and it looked really well built and very definitely light and airy. Wife is thinking of getting one once we've raised a bit of cash but I'm trying to steer her towards a box - if we can find somewhere to store it. If it was a trailer for our next purchase I'd definitely have a damn good look at them. Big plus is the ramp is on the correct side for offloading onto UK verges if the (emergency) need arises... can't be said for most Ifors... *Dons helmet and awaits a flaming session*

I've got an ifor williams, which will take two 16hh horses and it's about 900kg or 950kg I cannot remember. Anyway, I love it so far has been fab. I brought it from a friend and it has aliminumn (sp!!!) floor and is in perfect condition, it's an 505h I think ot 505something!!
They definitely hold their price and condition. Cannot fault it.
