Hi, I've just bought an IW 510 Classic (excited as my first trailer!); I'm looking for advice/experiences on which insurance companies can offer competitive rates for trailer insurance? I am with Carriage House - who are very competitive for horse insurance, however, the quote was fairly high and they confessed that they are not the most competitive.. Thanks in advance!

KBIS was £120 for the year. Over £100 seems the norm. Then I got trailer breakdown with Equine Rescue Serviced for about £50

Thanks, so breakdown cover for the trailer, which is different from breakdown cover for the car?

Yes, although some companies will cover both. The AA will only recover your car and will leave your horse and trailer at the side of the road.

Trailer breakdown recovers your trailer and your horse, mine takes my horse home or to a local livery yard if I'm too far. Also covers one night of livery fees.

NFU car insurance comes with trailer insurance as standard (you just have to tell them the details), this is why despite the car insurance being slightly more than I can get elsewhere the actual deal ends up being just as cheap and you have the convenience of them both being together.

Yikes! Ok, thanks - good tip! I'll ensure I add it..

Perfectly said by Abi90, ordinary car breakdown cover does not include any kind of rescue for your trailer or horse(s) - or any other livestock for that matter!

There are single memberships that cover your trailer only (but you then need another cover for your car) or combined car plus trailer breakdown products you can buy which are very cost effective.

Make sure you do get covered though, it is massively expensive (££££'s) and difficult to arrange for a trailer and horses to be taken home if you can't tow them yourself!!!

Google "Horsebox Breakdown Cover"

I found KBIS and SIEB the cheapest for my trailer.

If you are already an RAC member you can add PRP rescue for about £50 a year. They have a good reputation.

Be careful with your breakdown that they send seperate horse transport. I heard horror stories when I first got my trailer about companies that recover a trailer with horses still on board.
