My new horse is just a little too wide to travel comfortably in my Bateson Derby with the partition in. I say this, the partition will sit in place but his sides and touching the padded sides of the trailer, is this too tight for comfort and safety. If so, is it safe to move it to one side and secure it somehow or do I really need to take it out completely. The breast bar is a single one piece but the back bars are separated. So to my next question, is the back bar absolutely necessary? Sorry to be a bit of a numpty but have only ever travelled horses in someone elses trailer before and left the details to those with more experience than I.

I would take out the partition completly and just leave the breast bar in, I travel all my horses with no partition and just a breast bar but having said that it is probably safer with a back bar if you have a horse that sits or leans on the ramp, all my horses travel at a slight diagonal in the trailer but im sure you will get people saying you must have a back bar in !!

Id rather not have mine leaning directly on the ramp, so yes, Id say youd be better finding a full length breech bar and taking the partition out.

I'd take it out too.

I know lots of people who travel with just a breast bar. I don't personally, but my boy used to sit on the bar with the partition in, so I didn't want to chance having him sitting on the ramp. If you think there's a chance he might lean on the ramp, I'd try get a back bar.

I frequently travel horses without the partition as many prefer to stand diagonally, but I would not be comfortable not having a breach bar. It just provides a bit of extra security as I have heard horror stories of horses falling out of the back of trailers...

Also, with no partition you will need to cross tie otherwise he might well try and turn round which could cause huge problems.

Without a breech bar you also have the potential for a nasty accident while putting the ramp up. I would not trust the fastenings on the back of my trailer to support the weight of a large horse leaning hard against them. My breech and breast bar together only cost £80.
